In an unsurprising turn of events, the movie titled Kraven the Hunter has wrapped up its disappointing stint at the box office by setting yet another unfortunate record. Earning just $59 million globally, this film marks the lowest-grossing comic book production in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU) and is among the poorest performers in the superhero genre as a whole. After experiencing numerous postponements and rescheduling of its release date, the movie struggled to cross the finish line following its December debut, resulting in an even lower box office return than Madame Web managed during its theatrical run.
2024 found me captivated by a trio of SSU flicks gracing the silver screen: “Madame Web,” “Venom: The Last Dance,” and “Kraven the Hunter.” These blockbusters promised to solidify Sony’s superhero endeavor as a force to be reckoned with. Alas, my hopes were dashed when the financial returns failed to meet expectations. “Madame Web” struggled to bring in $100 million against its budget of $80 million. However, it was “Venom: The Last Dance,” the only box office success among the three, that truly shone. Its production costs ranging from $110-120 million, it managed to gross a staggering $479 million.
Conversely, Kraven the Hunter’s movie was estimated to cost between $110-130 million. Unfortunately, this high production budget wasn’t recouped by its earnings, as indicated by its $26 million global debut, a record low for Sony’s Superhero Universe. This poor start became even more concerning when compared to competing films like Wicked, Gladiator II, and Moana 2.
‘Kraven the Hunter’ Might Be the End of Sony’s Shared Universe
Given the disappointing box office earnings of Kraven, it seems that the prospects for the Sony Spider-Man Universe are more precarious than ever before. Although the Venom franchise has assisted in recovering some losses, it appears unlikely that Sony will produce further movies centered on Spider-Man’s sidekicks or adversaries. The Venom films have been profitable, but the three-part series, along with the entirety of the SSU films, have failed to earn a “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes for any of their movies, as they were universally criticized by reviewers.
In recent years, we’ve seen films like Venom, Morbius, and now Kraven the Hunter from the Sony Spider-Man Universe (SSU). As the comic book movie genre progresses and interconnected universes become more common, it seems that the SSU is reminiscent of an older style of superhero films. Unfortunately, the characters chosen to lead these movies, such as Spider-Man, don’t have strong or coherent connections, which has left fans wanting more.
Essentially, it’s not shocking that Kraven the Hunter fell short of earning $60 million in its cinema run. Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s portrayal of the Spider-Man antagonist had intriguing aspects capitalizing on its R-rating, marking a first for the SSU, but it was still a less-than-stellar film overall. However, it will be fascinating to observe how Kraven the Hunter fares on streaming services and physical media in the future. The essence of these characters often lies more in their connection with Spider-Man rather than anything else.
