Twin Peaks Star Carel Struycken Loses Priceless Memorabilia in Devastating L.A. Fires

Returning Los Angeles residents are sifting through the wreckage left by the destructive wildfires, uncovering a multitude of touching tales from the affected region. Some people lost minor possessions, while others were stripped of everything, including cherished keepsakes they had carefully accumulated over the years. A prime example is actor Carel Struycken and his wife, Tracey. Known for portraying The Giant in the original broadcast of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks in 1990, as well as The Fireman in 2017’s Twin Peaks: The Return, Struycken is now mourning the loss of his unique Twin Peaks memorabilia and costumes. The recent passing of Lynch earlier this month has only added to Struycken’s sorrow over the loss of these irreplaceable items.

In an interview, veteran character actor Struycken, known for his roles in the live-action Addams Family films and Twin Peaks, shared that he managed to preserve virtually nothing from his Altadena, California home due to a fast-moving fire. He explained to the media outlet that although he had evacuation plans in place, the fires erupted so unexpectedly that there was simply no time for action.

The wind was incredibly powerful and unpredictable, causing events to unfold simultaneously across the area. This suddenness forced us to depart immediately. I had meticulously arranged numerous items in anticipation of a fire, as I own a considerable amount of photography equipment. These cases were standing by, ready for us to grab should we need to evacuate. However, the speed at which this event transpired prevented any of my preparations from being implemented.

Upon arriving back home after the devastating fire, my heart sunk as I surveyed the damage – everything was in ruins, except for the bear-proof enclosure we use for our garbage cans (which you can see below). Seeing this small glimmer of hope, my son-in-law, Michael Anspach, took it upon himself to launch a GoFundMe campaign to help us rebuild our lives. Incredibly, the fundraising effort has already amassed over $78,000 for me, the beloved star of Twin Peaks. Additionally, I’ve been touched by the generosity of people who have donated clothing for my 7-foot tall frame. Since my garments are custom-made, it’s always a challenge to find off-the-rack options that fit me comfortably.

Carel Struycken Recalls His First Time Meeting David Lynch

Prior to his role in “Twin Peaks”, Struycken had already gained experience with casting processes in Hollywood through his appearances in films like “The Witches of Eastwick” and “St. Elsewhere”. Typically, a casting director is present alongside filmmakers to select actors for different roles. In the case of “Twin Peaks”, David Lynch wasn’t there to make these decisions. It was only when Struycken stepped onto the set of the TV show that he had his first encounter with the unconventional director.

On my initial day at the filming location, it was solely the casting director who had carried out the auditions, thus I hadn’t crossed paths with [David] until then. Upon my arrival, he rose from his director’s chair, approached me, and shook my hand while saying, “Things are going to go smoothly.

As Angelinos go back home to assess the remnants of their lives, Struycken’s story is merely one of countless accounts from individuals who have lost a significant portion of what they’ve meticulously constructed over the years. If you wish to extend aid to the 76-year-old Dutch actor and his spouse, consider donating through their GoFundMe page. Alternatively, if you’re seeking a recollection of his exceptional skills, look no further than Twin Peaks, which is currently available for streaming on Paramount+.
