During a Q&A session in London on Friday, actress Zoe Saldaña expressed that she’s still working through the events of the past few days and that she feels sad, following a question from moderator Edith Bowman about the emergence of bigoted tweets by her Emilia Pérez costar Karla Sofía Gascón.
Saldaña expressed her disappointment during a panel discussion alongside Jacques Audiard, Camille, and Clement Ducol, who were also initially supposed to include Gascón, but he didn’t attend. She continued, “It’s truly disheartening for me because I don’t endorse such views, and I have zero tolerance for any derogatory speech towards anyone, regardless of their group. My personal encounters with everyone involved in this film have always been about fostering inclusivity, collaboration, and addressing racial, cultural, and gender disparities. And it is unfortunate.
She concluded, “It’s unfortunate that we’re encountering this obstacle at the moment. However, I’m pleased to see everyone here and that each of you is continuing to stand by Emilia. This movie carries a potent message, and its ability to foster change in marginalized communities is crucial. I can only affirm that all of us who collaborated to tell this story did so out of love, respect, and curiosity, and we will keep propagating this message. For now, that’s all we have to share. Thank you.
