Contains spoilers for “Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage” Season 1, Episode 8 — “Diet Crap”
Despite being happy as a couple and having eliminated two potential reasons for an impending divorce, the relationship between Georgie (Montana Jordan) and Mandy Cooper (Emily Osment) in “Diet Crap” is far from smooth. Tension arises when Georgie interferes with Mandy’s stressful, fraudulent new door-to-door sales job. This interference reaches a boiling point when he successfully makes a sale right in front of her, making her feel inferior due to his income-generating abilities. So heated is her anger that she leaves him perplexed, prompting him to seek advice from an unexpected source – a familiar face from “Young Sheldon.
While looking for a self-help book to decipher his wife Mandy’s current state, Georgie unexpectedly encounters Ms. Sheryl Hutchins (Sarah Baker from “The Kominsky Method”), an old high school librarian who he used to know with his brother Sheldon (Iain Armitage). Shocked to learn that she has a career outside of the school, Georgie receives a sharp retort. Ms. Hutchins is bitingly critical about his marriage, and hands him the well-known relationship guide “Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus,” a move typical of her character, as her own romantic journey was a recurring theme on “Young Sheldon.
Ms. Hutchins was lovelorn
In the era of “Young Sheldon,” Sheldon frequently crossed paths with Ms. Hutchins, a recurring figure in town, who was affectionately known for her longing heart. The first time they met was in Season 1, Episode 2, titled “Rockets, Communists, and the Dewey Decimal System.” They continued to meet often as Sheldon sought guidance in his pursuit of friendship. During their interactions, Ms. Hutchins revealed to Sheldon that she is Mormon, and her search for a spouse was an endless quest to find someone to coexist with in the afterlife; otherwise, she mused that she would be satisfied with a planet populated by her cats.
During Season 3’s episode “A Couple Bruised Ribs and a Cereal Box Ghost Detector,” the Cooper family takes in Ms. Hutchins when she is hurt during a football game at Medford High School. As she heals, they strive to protect her and care for her collection of cats.
In the story titled “A Box of Treasure and the Science Matriarch,” love finds her when Georgie develops feelings for Mr. Givens (Brian Stepanek). An unexpected encounter occurs as Georgie happens upon them using Mr. Givens’ classroom for a secret rendezvous, while she was there to peek at test answers. Given that “Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage” has a history of inviting back familiar faces from the “Young Sheldon” series for guest appearances, there’s a possibility we might see her again in future episodes.
