Big Nick’s Next Move: Unraveling the Teaser in Den of Thieves 2 for Part 3

Fans of mid-budget action films and dads everywhere, brace yourselves! The third installment of “Den of Thieves” is on its way. Just a few weeks after “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera” claimed the top spot at the box office and marked another early January success for Gerard Butler, there’s been buzz that we haven’t had our fill of Nick “Big Nick” O’Brien or Donnie Wilson, portrayed by O’Shea Jackson Jr. The news is electrifying, isn’t it? With the tantalizing hint of what’s to come in the next chapter, I must admit that my anticipation has reached an all-time high!

By January 2025, mere days following the PVOD release of “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera,” IndieWire revealed that Lionsgate was actively preparing for a third movie in the heist series. It’s expected that Butler and Jackson, along with director Christian Gudagest, would reprise their roles. Although no formal announcements have been made regarding the storyline, location, or any new characters in the “Den of Thieves” (DOT) franchise, I’ve got some ideas about potential directions following the ending of “Den of Thieves 2.”

It’s Not Over Between Big Nick O’Brien And Donnie Wilson

caution: significant plot reveals for the film “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera” follow. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, it’s best to stop reading here (and remember not to consume any evidence-laden donuts).

With the discussion on potential spoilers now set aside, let’s delve into the conclusion of “Den of Thieves 2” and my thoughts on its hints towards a sequel and potentially additional chapters in this gripping crime series that’s sure to captivate viewers multiple times.

Following the World Diamond Center robbery, the thrilling car chase through the mountains involving the Octopus mob gang aiding Nick and Donnie suggests a positive outcome for their unusual friendship. However, this harmony is short-lived when Nick betrays the group to the Pantera task force, leading to Donnie’s arrest. The story takes another unexpected turn as Donnie, during transport to a new prison, is either rescued or kidnapped by the mafia and given a position within their organization. A text sent by Donnie at the end of the film hints that he may have been part of this plan, leading Big Nick to believe that the once troubled and ethically questionable ex-LASD deputy might still be involved in shady dealings.

The closing scene of the sequel Den of Thieves 2 leaves plenty of room for interpretation regarding Big Nick’s future. Throughout the first two films, it’s clear that his personal life is in disarray: his wife has left him, he rarely sees his daughters, he’s been suspended from work, and there’s a compromising video being used against him as leverage. Given these circumstances, it seems plausible that Big Nick might be ready for a fresh start. Whether this new beginning involves returning to a life of crime, joining forces with the Pantera task force (or another similar group), or something else entirely, remains uncertain. However, it’s hard to imagine him returning to his old life in Los Angeles after the events depicted in the movie.

No matter how Den of Thieves 3 (let’s call it Den of Thi3ves, produced by Lionsgate) unfolds, I’ll be eagerly waiting for another viewing, as I believe it could be one of Gerard Butler’s finest performances. Here’s hoping we won’t have to wait as long this time around.
