Michael Fassbender, renowned actor known for films such as Inglourious Basterds, X-Men: First Class, and The Killer, has voiced his desire to revisit the Alien franchise and create another sequel. Fassbender brought David to life in Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, two significant yet controversial installments within the universe conceived by Ridley Scott. Interestingly, it appears that Fassbender’s affinity for the series stems solely from one person – Ridley Scott. Although Scott served as producer and consultant on both Alien: Romulus and the upcoming TV series Alien: Earth, it remains uncertain whether Fassbender would consider a return if anyone other than Scott were directing.
Fassbender recently discussed with Esquire his new television series, titled “The Agency“. Modeled after the French suspense drama “The Bureau“, the show focuses on Brandon Colby, also known as Martian, a secret agent operating covertly across the globe. This series debuted on Showtime in November and its final episode aired recently. Critics’ opinions vary, with a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 68%. In this interview, the actor addressed an intriguing query regarding his potential return to the “Alien “series, and here’s what he had to say:
Absolutely, I must say, working with Ridley was truly amazing. He’s simply extraordinary and incredibly inspiring. You see, he produces those massive films that are notoriously challenging to create, yet he excels at them effortlessly, making him simply magnificent.
Covenant” are films in the Alien series directed by Ridley Scott. After a long gap since the last Alien movie, “Alien Resurrection,” and two movies that were not well-received, Scott’s “Prometheus” was not heavily promoted as an Alien film. However, once it was released, it became clear that it was connected to the original 1979 Alien movie. By “Alien: Covenant,” Scott was firmly tying these prequels back to his initial film. Unfortunately, many viewers did not like where these prequels were going, and although Ridley Scott had plans for a third movie, the poor performance of “Covenant” led those plans, and the franchise, to be dropped.
Does the ‘Alien’ Franchise Have a Future?
According to Scott himself, he felt that the Alien series had come to an end following the underwhelming reception of Covenant. However, the arrival of Disney and Alien: Resurrection (Romulus) changed things dramatically. Romulus was a massive success for 20th Century Studios, making it likely that director Fede Álvarez will participate in any sequel if given the go-ahead. Furthermore, Alien: Earth, a series created by Noah Hawley for Hulu, is set to be the next major development in the Alien timeline, with producers placing high hopes on the xenomorphs thriving in the streaming world. Although Scott may have stepped back from directing projects within the Alien universe, he remains deeply involved as a producer in any future productions related to the franchise.
To bring Michael Fassbender back to the Alien series, it’s essential to fit his appearance seamlessly into the storyline, which spans from Prometheus to Alien: Resurrection. However, since David is an android, introducing him in any film could be similar to how late Ian Holm’s likeness was utilized for the synthetic Rook in Alien: Covenant, where Fassbender would essentially portray a new character with the same face as David.
