Apex

The highly anticipated Netflix thriller, titled “Apex“, will soon unite acclaimed actors Charlize Theron and Eric Bana, as well as Taron Egerton, known for his work in the “Carry-On” series. The film is being likened to a blend of “Free Solo” and “Silence of the Lambs”.

In the latest casting news, Eric Bana joins the ensemble of the movie “Apex,” according to Deadline, although his specific role remains undisclosed. The story revolves around Charlize Theron’s character, a rock climber who encounters a chilling predicament as she is pursued through the wilderness. Taron Egerton portrays the menacing figure stalking Theron’s character. It was in November 2024 that it was announced that the star of “Carry-On” had joined the “Apex” cast. Icelandic filmmaker Baltasar Kormákur, hailing from Reykjavík, is set to direct the movie, with the screenplay penned by Jeremy Robbins, whose works include the The Purge television series.

New information about the movie titled Apex is scarce, but a significant piece of the story is becoming clearer with Eric Bana signing on to join Egerton and Theron (who portrayed Clea in this year’s Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness). Fans might remember Bana from his role as Bruce Banner/Hulk in the 2003 movie adaptation of Marvel’s giant, green, and angry character. Although Edward Norton and later Mark Ruffalo took over the Hulk role within the MCU, Bana’s portrayal remains one of his most recognized films among general audiences. He has also starred in action-thrillers like Troy and Munich. According to Deadline, Bana recently completed work on the Netflix miniseries Untamed, co-starring Rosemarie DeWitt.

Although Taron Egerton hasn’t been part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe yet, fans have frequently mused about his suitability for the role of Wolverine. Interestingly, Taron’s Kingsman director, Matthew Vaughn, believes he could excel as Lex Luthor, a formidable adversary to Superman in the DC Universe.

Is Apex A Perfect Casting/Director/Writer Storm?

In the upcoming Netflix production titled “Apex“, Charlize Theron, Tom Hardy, and Idris Elba will collaborate for the first time in a movie. Notably, Theron is also serving as a producer for this project. Interestingly, this will mark Idris Elba’s debut on Netflix, while Tom Hardy previously achieved success with the hit series “Carry-On“. On the other hand, Charlize Theron’s last appearance on Netflix was in the 2020 film “The Old Guard“, and a sequel to this movie is now scheduled for release.

The trio of Charlize Theron, Taron Egerton, and Eric Bana could potentially form a strong acting ensemble. Charlize Theron is an accomplished actress who won an Academy Award for her portrayal of serial killer Aileen Wuornos in the 2003 film “Monster.” She’s been nominated twice more, for “North Country” (2006) and “Bombshell” (2020). Taron Egerton delivered a stellar performance in the Elton John biopic “Rocketman,” and earned a Golden Globe win for his role as the rock star. Eric Bana has received nominations in Australia, including an FCCA nod for his role in “The Dry.” The sequel to “The Dry,” also starring Bana, was released in 2024.

The three actors have impressive acting skills and resumes, and we’ve got Baltasar Kormákur, an experienced survival thriller director, joining us. He directed the 2022 movie “Beast” starring Idris Elba, as well as “Everest” and “Adrift”. Interestingly, Kormákur has previously worked with Egerton as a producer on “Rocketman”.

Jeremy Robbins’ script also reportedly wowed Netflix. As a July 2024 Deadline article noted:

The Netflix executives were so impressed by the script that they decided to purchase it solely based on the involvement of the producers. Later, when considering actors and directors, Charlize Theron and Baltasar Kormákur emerged as their top picks. In a unique turn of events, both Theron and Kormákur agreed to join the project right after reading the script.
