In March 2023, Larry Jackson officially unveiled gamma, a move that immediately etched his name into music industry history. While Jackson had already amassed an impressive resume as an executive at RCA Records and Apple Music, where he climbed the A&R ladder under Clive Davis’s mentorship and held the top content position, respectively, helping Apple align with artists like Nicki Minaj and Drake, his independent venture, backed by Eldridge, Apple, and A24, ensured that the broader entertainment world would be keeping a close eye on him.
Jackson values black ownership deeply, and this sentiment has been shared by artists in the gamma circle, such as Usher. After being dropped by RCA Records, Usher joined gamma and later headlined the most-watched Super Bowl halftime show ever in 2024. This principle of empowering black artists has also been applied to business ventures beyond music, like a cosmetics brand called Sexyy Red (“Sexyy Boss”) and a jewelry line by Snoop Dogg named “Love Child”.
Snoop Dogg and Michael Jackson had a history together, but they truly bonded in more recent times. As Snoop stated to The Hollywood Reporter, “There was often someone standing between us achieving our goals.” By removing that barrier, it became Snoop and Jackson saying, “We’re going to demonstrate that young African-American men can collaborate and establish businesses, build enterprises, and generate wealth across generations. You don’t always have to be the one playing the game; you can also become the one in charge.
Not only does Snoop own Death Row Records, which he acquired in 2022, but he’s also combined it with gamma for distribution and catalog growth. On the other hand, Michael Jackson has been vocal about his disapproval of the traditional major label system, claiming it’s outdated and still rooted in 20th-century business practices.
Jackson stated, ‘We mainly stick to releasing an album, a video, and that’s about the extent of our terms.’ However, we broadened our vocabulary by teaming up with Snoop on a jewelry line. This new venture has surpassed the monthly gross revenue of the renowned Death Row catalog in just its first month! … The Sexyy Boss collection, launched on Black Friday, has already sold out. … It’s incredibly rewarding and validating to see it take off like this.
In the negotiation process, Jackson proposed a mutual agreement with Snoop. He suggested that some of Snoop’s Death Row earnings be invested in Gamma’s Series A equity, even though its value was zero at the time. Surprisingly, Snoop agreed, strengthening not only their business bond but also their personal relationship. Jackson’s unwavering loyalty and faith in Snoop and Gamma were evident in his response, “You know what, man? Let’s do it.” This gesture of unity was crucial to my investors and personally significant to me as well.
Gamma is currently valued at $420 million.
The artist known as Sexyy Red, fresh off her collaboration with Bruno Mars on “Fat, Juicy & Wet,” represents another example of seizing an opportunity. As Jackson puts it, “Ever since the summer of 2023, Sexyy Red has been on a streak of hit songs. Her music resonates strongly with a large group of listeners seeking a bit of escape and laughter, which is particularly relevant given the challenges society faces today.
Jackson has witnessed the triumphs of artists like Leona Lewis, Jennifer Hudson, Lana Del Rey, and Kelly Clarkson, and he sees similar potential in Sexyy. “She stood out dramatically,” he says of her early appearance in a Chief Keef video. “There was something about her – a unique quality that made me eager to champion her and arrange a meeting with Nicki Minaj. When I reflect on the recent video we shot with Bruno Mars, Lady Gaga, and Rosé from Blackpink, she held her own and didn’t lose any of her shine. She took center stage. This year has been phenomenal for her, and with what we have planned for the future, 2025 is going to be even more impressive. I just hope she’s ready.
What kind of knowledge does someone from the music industry typically have about beauty products or jewelry? Jackson is an exceptional executive who holds a brand ambassadorship with Cartier, yet he attributes his success to trusting his collaborators. Similarly, Snoop and others like him often prefer working with experts who don’t require constant supervision.
According to Snoop, it’s key to work with individuals who excel in their roles, giving them the freedom to flourish and expand the brand. Meanwhile, focus on your strengths – this synergy is what leads to success.
Jackson also points out, “These events aren’t just happening because we are spiritually devoted individuals. We’re action-oriented people. We step up to the challenge and take our shots. I have immense trust in this team and a deep sense of loyalty towards each other, which is the key ingredient behind gamma’s success.
