Here comes a sneak peek of Elsbeth Season 2, Episode 9! If you’d prefer to watch it yourself and enjoy the humor, you can do so by subscribing to Paramount+.
When I started watching the initial episode on the 2025 TV lineup featuring Elsbeth, I was geared up to witness Eric McCormack in his bag guy role. Yet, I didn’t foresee a jest about Meghan Markle. Instead, it turned out to be a clever remark from Wendell Pierce’s character, Captain Wagner, and there’s an intriguing backstory between him and the Duchess of Sussex that explains why this fits perfectly.
The Joke Elsbeth Made That Involved Meghan Markle
In the midst of uncovering Elsbeth’s troubled past during an intense chat between her and Kaya, Wagner entered with a fresh case. He shared that a man had passed away after being spotted at an extravagant spa, prompting our legal-turned-detective to investigate. Here’s how the exchange unfolded:
1. Elsbeth: “What is it this time?”
2. Wagner: “A man died at a fancy spa. I need your detective skills.”
3. Elsbeth: “Fine, let’s go.”
4. Wagner: “I knew you’d want in on this one.”
5. Elsbeth: “You always know just how to bait me.”
Currently, I require your assistance with a case. Regrettably, a young man named Cole Campbell has been discovered deceased along the highway. It appears his vehicle veered off the road.
Elsbeth: OK, why me?
Responding to the query, Wagner enthusiastically described the lavishness of the spa, mentioning that it attracts high-profile individuals such as celebrities and royals. He even hinted playfully about Meghan Markle and the gossip surrounding her possible visit, saying: “It’s been whispered that she was here too.
The location where he was last spotted was a high-end spa, frequented by celebrities and royals alike. Yet, it turned out that Meghan Markle was not present at all amidst the global media speculation surrounding her.
Including members of the Royal Family in a fictional TV series can sometimes feel unexpected or out of place, as their status makes them a popular subject of discussion and humor. However, the joke made about the Duchess of Sussex was entirely harmless and seemed to support her, which is fitting given Wendell Pierce’s real-life friendship with her.
This Joke Makes Sense Because Of Wendell Pierce And Meghan Markle’s Relationship
Meghan Markle and Wendell Pierce have a long history together, as they worked together on the TV show Suits from 2013 to 2019. During this time, Pierce portrayed Robert Zane, the father of Markle’s character Rachel Zane, in a total of 36 episodes of the popular legal drama.
How To Watch Elsbeth
You can catch Elsbeth on CBS each Thursday at 10 p.m. Eastern Time, or you can stream fresh episodes a day later on Paramount+.
Ever since joining the cast of Suits, Pierce has not only played a supportive on-screen father figure but also shown genuine care for his co-star’s off-screen daughter. In 2018, the actor portraying Wagner stepped in to offer advice to Meghan Markle’s real father, Thomas, after he publicly expressed disappointment about his daughter’s wedding. Pierce simply encouraged him, saying, “If you truly love your daughter, just let that love guide you.
Additionally, in 2021, Markle’s father expressed his thoughts regarding her Oprah interview and a widely-discussed interview he conducted. He made clear that he has been backing Meghan publicly for quite some time, stating that he “has supported Meghan in the media for a long period.
Over the past year, the actor from The Wire has been vocal about frequently being questioned about Meghan Markle. He’s left no doubt in anyone’s mind that he finds her “wonderful” and believes she is “the nicest person ever.” Furthermore, he expressed his desire to see her acting again.
I’d be just as enthusiastic about it, particularly if Elsbeth were the one suggesting it, and there was a chance for those actors to share the screen once more.
In essence, given Pierce’s history of backing Markle and her professional past with him, his seemingly unexpected “Elsbeth” joke becomes more understandable. It was not only amusing but also held a richer implication, hinting at the actor’s affection for his on-screen daughter.
