In 2021, the fifth and last installment in the “CSI” franchise, titled “CSI: Vegas“, premiered on CBS as a continuation of the original “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” series. The first season featured the return of William Petersen and Jorja Fox reprising their roles as Gil Grissom and Sara Sidle, while Marg Helgenberger joined them in the second season, reprising her role as Catherine Willows from the original series.
Originally planned as a conclusion, “CSI: Vegas” was surprisingly given a second season without the involvement of Fox and Petersen, who left the series at the end of its first run. Nevertheless, the absence of these key characters didn’t deter viewers, as the show attracted a dedicated fanbase through its array of compelling new characters, chiefly Paula Newsome portraying Maxine “Max” Roby as the head of Las Vegas Crime Lab. Despite moderate viewership, CBS decided to renew “CSI: Vegas” for a brief 10-episode third season, which ultimately marked the show’s final chapter.
In its third season, the series “CSI: Vegas” was on an upward trend, evident in the significant rise of ratings and a 79% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, this popular show left fans shocked and dismayed when CBS decided to end it before the fourth season began. This decision seemed puzzling since the show presented a golden chance for CBS to mimic the success of the “Law & Order” franchise by reinventing the series within a shared universe – an opportunity that now seems unlikely to materialize.
‘CSI: Vegas’ Had Solid Though Unspectacular Ratings
In the final episode of “CSI: Vegas,” titled “Tunnel Vision,” about 4.25 million viewers tuned in, compared to only 2.76 million who watched the finale of the second season. Yet, despite this increase in viewership, the show was on the brink of being canceled in April 2024. Both “CSI: Vegas” and the CBS comedy-drama series “So Help Me Todd,” which was also in its second season, were unfortunately canceled at that time.
In 2023 and 2024, even though CSI: Vegas had decent ratings at its cancellation, it was the least-viewed CBS drama series during that period. With an overflow of content, coupled with the revival of Cold Case and the spin-off Fire Country, CBS found itself in a challenging position when making programming choices. Additionally, the termination of CSI: Vegas was partially due to financial factors, as it became a casualty of diminishing network production funds and a weakening advertising market.
CBS Canceled ‘CSI: Vegas’ To Make Room for Other Shows
Just as NCIS: Hawai’i was taken off CBS to accommodate the new spin-off series NCIS: Origins, CSI: Vegas was removed from the network’s schedule to make space for other shows. Unlike the cancellation of NCIS: Hawai’i, which aimed to strengthen and expand the long-running NCIS franchise, the cancelation of CSI: Vegas appears to signal the end of the CSI series.
In April 2024, CBS decided to end their run for “CSI: Vegas” to create space for a few of their upcoming Fall 2024 shows, such as “Matlock,” “NCIS: Origins,” and the medical drama series “Watson.” Previously occupied by “CSI: Vegas,” the Sunday time slot is now being filled by “Watson.
‘CSI: Vegas’ Didn’t End With a Proper Series Finale
Despite CSI: NY, which aired on CBS for nine seasons from 2004 to 2013, being widely adored as the best spin-off, CSI: Vegas offered a more thrilling viewing experience compared to its counterparts, CSI: Miami and CSI: Cyber. This is evident in the growing viewership it garnered before its cancellation. Regrettably, the sudden cancellation announcement for CSI: Vegas was unexpected, denying the show a fitting series finale conclusion.
Similar to its forerunner, CSI: Vegas adhered to the weekly case structure, interspersing it with character-driven subplots. The final episode, “Tunnel Vision,” functioned well as a season finale, with Max being kidnapped providing an intriguing climax. However, this episode left several plot threads hanging, such as Chris’s recovery from his wounds, Josh rejoining the CSI team after going off the grid, Max’s blossoming romance, and the impending wedding of Penny and Jack. These storylines remain unresolved, leaving viewers in suspense.
This “Tunnel Vision” episode of CSI: Vegas was enjoyable, but it didn’t offer a satisfying conclusion for the team members who made a lasting impact on viewers before the series was cancelled. The final season of CSI: Vegas should have delivered a climactic ending that neatly tied up all the stories and plotlines viewers had grown invested in throughout the three seasons. Currently, CSI: Vegas can be streamed on Paramount+ and CBS TVE.
