In just about two weeks, we’ll be diving into the long-awaited Season 3 of Yellowjackets. However, before we reach that point, one of the show’s crucial characters’ tragic demise at the end of Season 2 is being clarified by co-showrunner Jonathan Lisco. To refresh your memory, the climactic Season 2 finale saw Lisa (Nicole Maines) pointing a shotgun at Juliette Lewis’ character, Natalie, during Lottie’s ritual in the woods. In an attempt to intervene, Misty (Christina Ricci) administered phenobarbital to Lisa, but it was Natalie who stepped in front of her and took the bullet, ultimately giving up her life for another.
In an interview with Games Radar, Lisco stated that, just as in real life, actions have consequences. He believes it wouldn’t be fair to fans if the exceptional cast of Yellowjackets remained unscathed throughout the series without experiencing repercussions from their experiences. “If the show is about trauma and the aftermath of what they endured,” he said, “then there should be aftermath.
If the experiences of the main characters in this series don’t resonate with you in some way, there won’t be any emotional or psychological consequences to watch. We strive to make this clear to our valued viewers because if the story doesn’t touch them deeply, then our purpose isn’t being served. This is essentially the essence of our show.
Since the debut of Yellowjackets in 2021, Lewis has been a regular cast member. Her absence from Season 3 will undoubtedly be noticeable, but the creators have found a replacement of equal fame: Academy Award winner Hilary Swank. The specifics of her character in the series are still unknown, but she’ll be joined by Joel McHale this season. Consequently, it’s clear that Yellowjackets Season 3 will boast an impressive lineup of celebrities, and given its reputation for being wild and unpredictable, it’s shaping up to surpass the excitement of the previous seasons.
‘Yellowjackets’ Has Divided Fans and Critics
Although the show Yellowjackets has a passionate fanbase who unfailingly laud its merits, it’s undeniable that not everyone has enjoyed it. This is demonstrated by its Rotten Tomatoes scores, where season 1 received a perfect 100% from critics but only an audience rating of 73%. The divide became even more pronounced in season 2, with critics awarding it a 94%, while the general public rated it significantly lower at just 44%. One Rotten Tomatoes user described season 2 as “super frustrating,” stating that there were no satisfying answers to the mysteries, the characters were unlikable, and they found themselves unable to endure three more seasons of this exasperating nonsense.
Boyd Hilton from Empire Magazine expressed a contrasting view in his critique of Yellowjackets Season 2, stating, “The second season of Yellowjackets remains just as distinctively twisted and strange as its opening credits, with this brilliantly innovative plotline delivering numerous alarmingly unsettling twists.” Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times concurred, reinforcing the sentiment by noting that “Yellowjackets, Showtime’s gripping, darkly amusing drama, has firmly established itself as one of the most unforgettable series of this decade.
Will “Yellowjackets” Season 3 maintain the level of controversy as its predecessor? To find out, make sure to catch the premiere on Showtime starting February 16th, with a double episode release, followed by additional episodes airing weekly. If you haven’t seen Seasons 1 and 2 yet, you can stream them now on Paramount+.
