Saturday Night Live is adding an exceptional touch to the 2025 TV lineup with its groundbreaking Season 50, where Kenan Thompson is marking his remarkable 22nd season as a main cast member. Prior to their 50th Anniversary live special, Peacock debuted the docu-series “Beyond Saturday Night“, offering former SNL stars an opportunity to reminisce about their years spent in Studio 8H, crafting legendary sketches such as “More Cowbell.” Thompson, who has had a remarkable run on one of TV’s all-time greatest sketch series, recently shared his reasons for consistently returning to 30 Rock.
It’s tough to picture established SNL stars like Kenan Thompson feeling jittery on the renowned Studio 8H stage. However, Kenan, who was already a TV star before reaching adulthood, appears to be an exception to this rule. Although he’s now fully at ease with his SNL role, Kenan shared with People that there was a time when he felt out of place, starting with a particularly nerve-wracking audition process.
Although I can’t recall specific details about the material, I can vividly remember the feelings and tension. The initial charm of 30 Rock captivated me. It was a grand exterior housing a tiny studio, leaving me confused as I hadn’t witnessed much behind-the-scenes action before.
The experience was incredibly surreal and nerve-wracking since I had to perform stand-up comedy without being a professional stand-up comedian. Fortunately, my skills in acting turned out to be beneficial for the show. It all worked out in the end, but it was an extremely stressful situation.
As a devoted fan, I’ve always admired that the actor behind Kenan and Kel proudly identifies as an actor first and foremost. This unique perspective often sets him apart from many of his SNL peers, as he’s typically scripted into sketches differently due to his distinct approach. Unlike most SNL cast members who are usually handpicked from improv troupes like Groundlings and Second City, or invited straight from the stand-up circuit, he may not have the same level of formal training in sketch comedy and improvisation that they do.
Regarding the SNL casting team, they recognized an exceptional talent in the actor who was not conventionally trained in comedy, despite his rocky first season as portrayed by himself. Now, he stands as a seasoned SNL veteran, having been part of some of the show’s most unexpected viral sketches, such as “Beavis and Butt-Head,” and maintaining composure even when others lose their professionalism during filming.
To fully appreciate Kenan Thompson’s record-breaking run with SNL, it’s important to understand that he has been a part of this 50-year legacy on NBC for almost half its duration. There isn’t anyone else quite like him in the show’s history, and it’s unlikely anyone will come close to matching his streak. Moreover, judging by Thompson’s own words, he intends to stay as long as they keep inviting him back.
It’s remarkable since very few places have more than eight or twelve seasons, as you understand. However, this unique location captivates its people, who seem to depend on and cherish it. Therefore, when they offer me the opportunity for what seems like the best job in the world, how could I possibly refuse? It’s all out of love and gratitude for such a blessing – having stable employment.
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but appreciate the heartfelt passion that Nickelodeon alum pours into his work, a feeling I share wholeheartedly. If I were in his shoes, I’d cherish every moment and never consider leaving. Given SNL’s affection for him, it seems unlikely they’ll let him go, but when Kenan Thompson eventually departs the cast, it will presumably be a decision he makes himself.
The co-founder of Kenan has shared that the toughest aspect of staying on the series for such an extended period is saying farewell to everyone, especially colleagues who depart as writers or actors – a parting that always brings bittersweet emotions. However, I have no doubt that his departure will be the most poignant and heart-wrenching goodbye ever experienced by the show.
It’s good news that the day we’ll see Thompson again isn’t imminent, as he shares his enthusiasm for each new season. Moreover, it seems like he’ll have a chance to catch up with old friends, given the numerous famous alumni returning for the 50th Anniversary special, available on Peacock. I can hardly wait to see which more iconic SNL characters will make an appearance.
To celebrate the 40th Anniversary, Will Ferrell once again took on the role of Alex Trebek in a special episode of “Celebrity Jeopardy.” Similarly, for an extended anniversary edition, let’s imagine a long-running celebration featuring Kenan Thompson as Steve Harvey impersonating the host of “Celebrity Family Feud.
Make sure you’re tuned in to NBC on the 16th of February, where Studio 8H will unveil some exciting revelations!
