Since the debut of the character known as the Hulk in Marvel Comics, specifically in his first solo issue “The Incredible Hulk” #1 back in May 1962, he has been a prominent figure within the Marvel Universe. Over the years, however, this character has seen numerous transformations, one of the most significant being that initially, he was grey-toned but due to a printing error, he was changed to his iconic green shade in issue #2. Interestingly, the concept of different colored Hulks became an integral part of the character’s lore. In 2008, as part of a marketing campaign for the film “The Incredible Hulk” within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel introduced a new enigmatic Red Hulk in Hulk Vol. 3 #1 that was published in January of that year.
The character known as the Red Hulk was initially conceived during the 1978 television series “The Incredible Hulk,” with creator Kenneth Johnson envisioning a red Hulk to symbolize anger, which Marvel decided against. Over the past 17 years, the Red Hulk has grown to be an integral aspect of the Hulk’s storyline. Since then, the Red Hulk has been featured in various media such as “Avengers: Earth Mightiest Heroes,” “Avengers: Assembled,” “Hulk: Agents of S.M.A.S.H.,” and will soon make its appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) during “Captain America: Brave New World.
As a fan, I must admit that the Red Hulk often leaves me in a state of bewilderment. Is this just a color variant of the original Hulk or an entirely new character? The trailer for “Captain America: Brave New World” even hints at this mystery with someone questioning, “Since when was he red?” about the Hulk. Here are some key distinctions between the iconic Green Hulk and the more recent Red Hulk.
Green Hulk and Red Hulk Aren’t the Same Person
To clear up any confusion, let me make it clear that Red Hulk and the original Green Hulk are two different individuals. For simplicity’s sake, we will refer to the Green Hulk as simply ‘Hulk’.
In a more conversational style, the famous Hulk character that many are familiar with is actually Dr. Bruce Banner, a gamma scientist who underwent a transformation into the Incredible Hulk following an encounter with excessive gamma radiation. This character first appeared in The Incredible Hulk #1 comic. Often depicted as an enraged, mindless monster, the Hulk has been shown to have multiple personas that stem from Bruce Banner’s childhood traumas. It was revealed in Incredible Hulk #227 (1978) that these distinct identities were not just a result of his mutation affecting his brain, but because Dr. Banner suffered from dissociative identity disorder. The Green Hulk represents his repressed childhood anger and aggression, while the original Grey Hulk, later known as Joe Fixit, symbolizes his repressed selfish desires.
Regarding the Red Hulk, it’s often thought of as being linked to General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, who first appeared in The Incredible Hulk #1 all the way back in 1962. However, the Red Hulk didn’t make its debut until January 2008, and for two years, the character’s true identity was unknown. It wasn’t until Hulk Volume 3 #23 in June 2010 that the secret was finally revealed.
In essence, Ross and the Red Hulk are not two distinct minds akin to Bruce Banner and the Hulk, but rather they share a single consciousness. Over time, Ross deliberately submitted to transformation by The Leader and M.O.D.O.K’s Intellegencia group, resulting in his metamorphosis into the Red Hulk. This change, as he sees it, was driven by a desire to safeguard others from potential hazards such as the Hulk. Conversely, Bruce Banner transformed into the Hulk due to an accident and has spent much of his life striving to find a cure for himself.
Anger Is the Source of the Hulk’s Strength, While It Is the Red Hulk’s Weakness
On the outside, it appears that both the Hulk and the Red Hulk possess extremely comparable abilities. They can transform from average humans into gigantic beings with superhuman strength, rapid healing, and the ability to leap vast distances. However, one of the major distinctions between these two characters lies in their source of power. Unlike the Hulk, who becomes stronger and angrier as a fight progresses, thereby increasing his power, the Red Hulk’s method of generating strength is different.
As a dedicated cinema enthusiast, I’d put it this way: Contrarily, the Red Hulk gains power by sucking up energy. Given that the original Hulk emits minimal gamma radiation, the Red Hulk actually gets stronger when he squares off against him. Moreover, the Red Hulk exudes his unique form of radiation, a yellow radiance that causes his eyes to blaze fiercely. This intensity can reach such degrees that he can transform sand into glass and even melt objects he lays his hands on.
In theory, the Red Hulk possesses greater power over the regular Hulk in various aspects due to General Ross’ tactical knowledge that he retains as the Red Hulk. While the Hulk is typically an enraged beast, the Red Hulk has military strategy embedded within him. Though the Professor Hulk or the warrior Worldbreaker Hulk could theoretically match the Red Hulk in this area, the classic Green Hulk would find himself at a disadvantage when confronting the traditional Red Hulk. Even with one of his other personas, the Red Hulk exhibits strategic genius, whereas Smart Hulk’s intelligence is more focused on scientific fields.
The primary distinction between the two Hulks lies in their response to anger. For the original Hulk, anger fuels his immense strength, making him a tough adversary. Conversely, for the Red Hulk, anger serves as a significant weakness. As he becomes more enraged, his body temperature escalates, which his physiology cannot effectively cool down due to a lack of cooling mechanisms. This overheating weakens him and can cause him to lose focus, potentially leading to fainting. Unlike the Hulk, who transforms back into his human form when he loses consciousness, the Red Hulk does not follow the same pattern.
Hulk Is a Hero Who Relapses, Red Hulk Is a Villain Who Reformed
One significant distinction between the Hulk and the Red Hulk lies in their public image, both within the Marvel Universe and among fans. While the Hulk is often seen as a misunderstood outcast who is sometimes viewed as a villain, yet he stands tall as one of Marvel’s most esteemed heroes, the Red Hulk initially emerged as a villain but later changed his ways to fight alongside these heroes. Despite this transformation, the Red Hulk continues to be perceived by fans as a Marvel antagonist, which is why he portrays a foe in “Captain America: Brave New World”, whereas the Hulk is part of the Avengers.
In the comic books, The Hulk initially joined The Avengers as one of its founding members, but left after just the second issue. Despite this early departure, he remains an honorary member and has since taken on a more prominent role within the team, especially in light of the comics adopting a model similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Hulk also serves as an unofficial replacement for The Fantastic Four and has collaborated with other heroes who often find themselves ostracized or misunderstood, such as Doctor Strange, Namor, and The Silver Surfer, forming their own group called The Defenders. During the tenure of Red Hulk, he was part of a villainous counterpart to The Defenders, known as The Offenders.
In an alternate rendition, The Red Hulk oversaw his own iteration of The Thunderbolts, a team made up of anti-heroic figures such as The Punisher, Elektra, Deadpool, and Agent Venom. This is one factor that has sparked speculation among fans that the forthcoming MCU Thunderbolts may bear the name Thunderbolt Ross, although Marvel Studios has refuted this claim. Red Hulk was also a part of The Avengers, a position suggested by Bruce Banner to Captain America. Despite his past as a hero within the Marvel Universe, Red Hulk continues to be perceived by many fans as more of a villain than a hero, even though he has not assumed that role for quite some time.
Although the Hulk and Red Hulk share certain traits, they are distinct characters. On the outside, Red Hulk might seem to possess greater powers, and his combined consciousness makes him a formidable adversary. However, Bruce Banner and the Hulk embody reluctant heroes, often feared by society, yet ready to protect and rescue others when needed. This is why, when Loki threatened Tony Stark with an army, simply uttering “We have a Hulk” was enough to make everyone understand that the odds were in favor of the Avengers. It’s intriguing to speculate about how Harrison Ford’s Red Hulk will influence the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the future and whether he’ll ever get an opportunity to square off against Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk.
