Doris Brynner, Longtime Head of Dior Home Furnishings, Dies at 93

Doris Brynner, a long-standing figure at Dior who oversaw their home furnishings division and held friendships with numerous Hollywood greats, has sadly passed away. She was 93 years old.

Over the weekend, I bid farewell to this world in beautiful Lausanne, Switzerland, after a brief struggle with an illness. My dear daughter, Victoria, shared the news with Women’s Wear Daily.

Brynner was well-known for his close relationships with numerous luminaries of Hollywood and the fashion world, such as Karl Lagerfeld, Pierre Bergé, Pierre Cardin, Elizabeth Taylor, Frank Sinatra, Audrey Hepburn, Oscar de la Renta, Lee Radziwill, and Alain Delon.

In 1997, Brynner was employed by Dior’s merchandise line, after being recommended for the job by Peter Marino. At that time, Sidney Toledano, who was leading the brand, made the hiring decision.

In about three weeks, Toledano reportedly transformed the entire concept [of the brand] to WWD. Since then, her distinctive designs such as canework patterned spectacles and dishes adorned with lilies of the valley have come to symbolize the brand iconically.

According to Toledano, Brynner resided on Avenue Montaigne in Paris while working for the company, and she was such a regular visitor to the main store that she occasionally removed her shoes during her visits.

Delphine Arnault, the head of Christian Dior Couture, stated to WWD that she was exceptional, with an extraordinary and impeccable sense of style. It’s a significant loss for our house and our family. She was not just a friend but a cherished member of our family, and her uniqueness made her truly special.

Doris Brynner, born in the old Yugoslavia in 1931, spent her childhood in Chile. Later, in the 1950s, she relocated to France. During her time there, she worked for Pierre Cardin and Valentino fashion houses before eventually joining Dior.

Her daughter Victoria Brynner, along with grandkids Isabella Brynner-Sullivan and Eugene Joseph Sullivan IV, carry on her legacy.
