Speaking of remarkable athletes, very few can match the awe-inspiring presence of Michael Jordan. This sports titan was unstoppable, dominating numerous NBA Finals with the Chicago Bulls and racking up countless individual honors. During his tenure, he not only claimed victory but also gained the admiration of many of his adversaries. The Lakers led by Magic Johnson in the 80’s and early 90’s were among the teams he faced off against, and a veteran from the Los Angeles team reminisced about their encounters with Jordan, who was known for his verbal sparring.
From 1983 to 1997, Byron Scott played in the NBA, and for ten of those years, he was part of the Los Angeles Lakers. This gave him numerous chances to face off against Michael Jordan during his peak performance years. A three-time champion, Scott recently reminisced about his career on an episode of the All The Smoke podcast (available on YouTube). During their conversation, they touched upon MJ. As a coach turned player, Scott praised Jordan’s abilities and shared that he made an effort to avoid provoking Jordan before any particular game.
The man was clearly in a league of his own when playing against younger opponents, almost. He was one of those individuals – I didn’t fear anyone, but facing [MJ] made me cautious. In fact, he was the only person I would tread carefully around. I’d tell myself, “I won’t provoke him.” … The only person I would pause and consider, “I won’t provoke him,” was him. He’d make a shot, and I’d think, “Well played, MJ.” I made sure not to provoke him because I had seen him perform extraordinary feats – 40, 50 points as if it were nothing, all due to someone being aggressive or overly physical with him. … Everyone else, I didn’t care about, but him, the Black Jesus, I wouldn’t dare approach in such a manner.
Currently, the previous NBA Coach of the Year isn’t alone in extolling Michael Jordan‘s talents. Magic Johnson and Shaquille O’Neal, like many others before them, have praised Jordan too. Johnson even went as far as to call him the most powerful athlete he’s ever witnessed, attributing this to Jordan’s incredible energy levels. O’Neal confessed that he was intimidated by Jordan during their early encounters on the court. Interestingly, Scottie Pippen, who has had his fair share of disagreements with Jordan lately, has also acknowledged Jordan’s skills and mentioned that if given another opportunity, he would be happy to play alongside him once more.
It’s often pointed out that Space Jam’s lead character, Michael Jordan, had an edge due to his fierce competitiveness. He didn’t shy away from a challenge and wasn’t afraid to express his thoughts when conversing with another player. To illustrate this, Byron Scott shared a story during an interview. Scott reminisced about a time during his first stint with the Lakers when he was injured and couldn’t participate in a game (where Jordan would have been his matchup). When Jordan found out about Scott’s inability to play, he had a humorous response:
In this rephrased conversation, Jordan steps off the bus and greets B with “Hey, what’s going on?” To which B replies, “What’s up, MJ.” Jordan then shares that he won’t be playing tonight because of his ankle injury. B asks who will guard him instead, and Jordan responds by mentioning Anthony Peeler. When B jokes about giving Peeler a hard time, Jordan playfully suggests that if it’s Peeler on the court, B might want to go easy on him since he’s just a rookie.
Jordan exits the bus and talks to B, asking, “What’s happening?” B responds with a friendly greeting, “What’s up, MJ.” Jordan informs B that he can’t play tonight due to his ankle injury. B wonders who will be guarding him in the game, and Jordan mentions Anthony Peeler as the replacement player. B jokingly says he plans on giving Peeler a tough time, but if it’s really Peeler playing, Jordan advises him to go easy since Peeler is still new to the team.
In that game, the coach who once led the Nets attempted to guide Anthony Peeler on how to effectively play against Michael Jordan. However, it seemed to have little impact, as Jordan proceeded to score an impressive 54 points in the match. Notably, whenever Jordan scored a point, he reportedly glanced back at the sidelines, where Byron Scott was sitting with a smirk on his face. It’s worth mentioning that Jordan was renowned for his fearlessness, and his mental fortitude is extensively analyzed in ESPN’s The Last Dance, which can be streamed with a Netflix subscription.
It’s a topic of debate whether Michael Jordan, the founder of the Jordan Brand, surpasses the NBA’s all-time greats. He previously stated this himself in an interview with a journalist, expressing that he didn’t feel qualified to compare himself to players like Magic Johnson or Larry Bird, as they were at different stages of their careers during their play. However, many continue to argue that Jordan is unparalleled, and comments from figures like Byron Scott reinforce this viewpoint.
