Disney’s follow-up to its blockbuster hit in 2019, titled ““, is set to debut on popular video-on-demand platforms such as Prime Video, Fandango at Home, and Apple TV+ later this month. Surprisingly, even with its upcoming release, the film “Mufasa: The Lion King” has continued to rake in significant earnings at the box office since it left theaters on Dec 20, 2024. In fact, it’s expected to surpass its animated rival, ““, in domestic box office sales as early as this week. Starting from Tuesday, Feb 18, Disney enthusiasts can enjoy “Mufasa: The Lion King” right in the comfort of their homes.
In a weekend box office Top 5, Mufasa earned another $6.3 million (as reported by The Numbers), placing it third, only behind newcomers Dog Man ($36 million) and Companion ($9.3 million). With this addition, Disney’s latest cinematic endeavor now totals $229.7 million domestically, a figure that is soon expected to surpass Sonic 3’s $230.6 million. However, on the international stage, The Lion King sequel has significantly outperformed the financial success of the Jim Carrey and Keanu Reeves-led Sega adaptation.
In comparison to Sonic 3’s global earnings of $462.6 million, Mufasa (Aaron Pierre) has managed to rake in an impressive $653.3 million worldwide. Regrettably, despite this, Disney must acknowledge that the live-action adaptation of Mufasa and Scar’s story hasn’t matched up to the success of 2019’s The Lion King ($543.6 million) both in the U.S. and Canada, or globally. However, it remains a successful addition to Disney’s continually growing collection of films.
How Does ‘Mufasa’ Rank Financially When Compared to ‘The Lion King?’
Initially, it appeared doubtful that “Mufasa: The Lion King” would become a blockbuster when it premiered in December 2024. Despite a massive production budget of $200 million and an extensive marketing effort, Disney’s prequel/sequel is expected to turn a profit once the final numbers are tallied. Regrettably, its earnings won’t approach those of “The Lion King” (2019), which amassed a staggering $1.66 billion globally.
To clarify, it’s worth noting that the initial release of the hand-drawn The Lion King (1994) has outperformed Mufasa on a global scale during its original theatrical showings up to now. Starring Matthew Broderick and James Earl Jones, this timeless classic garnered $312.9 million domestically and an additional $458.2 million internationally, resulting in a worldwide gross of $771.1 million (as reported by Box Office Mojo). When accounting for inflation, that global total translates to an astonishing $1.63 billion in today’s value.
The movie “The Lion King: Mufasa” is currently showing in cinemas and will be available for digital purchase starting February 18th through common VOD platforms. Preorders are now being accepted at Fandango At Home (formerly known as Vudu) for $29.99.
