A few years prior to the success of “Everything Everywhere All at Once” at the Oscars, where it won best picture and director among many others, the directing duo Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan (commonly known as the Daniels) made their first full-length film in 2016 titled “Swiss Army Man“. This is one of the best movies you might not have seen yet, and now you can watch it for free. Starring Daniel Radcliffe, who has ventured into more unconventional roles post-“Harry Potter”, the film revolves around a character named Hank (Paul Dano, known for his roles in “The Fabelmans” and “There Will Be Blood”). Desperate and stranded on a desert island, Hank is considering suicide when he notices a dead body, played by Radcliffe, washed ashore. He tries to revive the corpse but finds that it can only pass gas.
Then, something extraordinary and absurdly funny transpires: the deceased emits gas bubbles that propel it over water like a jet ski, enabling Hank to hitch a ride on the corpse across the ocean, escaping the island. This unexpected event leads to a bond between them, and further amusing bodily antics follow as they navigate their way homeward. Over time, the corpse learns to communicate and is named Manny.
As a movie enthusiast, I must say that Swiss Army Man left me in a whirlwind of emotions. At times, it was downright disgusting and unapologetically funny, yet profoundly philosophical and eerily surreal. The bond between Radcliffe and Dano felt incredibly authentic, leaving you rooting for their success with every fiber of your being.
Both actors delivered outstanding performances that kept me hooked from start to finish. The writing and direction by the Daniels were nothing short of exceptional, making this film a true delight to watch.
‘Swiss Army Man’ Is a Difficult Film to Classify, And That’s a Good Thing
To put it simply, the film “Swiss Army Man” was well-received when it first came out. On Rotten Tomatoes, it got a 73% rating from critics (the audience score is slightly lower at 72%). Critics generally agreed that it’s “unusual and expertly acted,” providing viewers with an unforgettable experience that’s hard to categorize. While some might find its uniqueness off-putting, those who enjoy the unusual will find it appealing.
In his glowing review for RogerEbert.com, Matt Zoller Seitz expresses that Swiss Army Man offers an exceptionally unique cinematic adventure. He notes that the movie is a bizarre concoction of diverse elements, making it impossible to accurately compare it to any one thing. Seitz humorously labels it “Terrence Malick’s Weekend at Bernie’s,” and draws parallels with the works of Spike Jonze and the late David Lynch. If you were captivated by Everything Everywhere All at Once, or simply appreciate the unusual and dreamlike, don’t miss out on Swiss Army Man, which is now available for free streaming on Tubi.
