The popularity of superhero stories remains high, and fans are eagerly anticipating what co-CEO James Gunn has planned for the evolving DC Universe (DCU). While the previous shared universe can be accessed with a Max subscription, it appears that the DCU will be a much more interwoven entity. Lately, Gunn has discussed a Batman adversary he wishes to bring to reality, and I find his unconventional selection intriguing.
There isn’t much known about the upcoming DC film series yet, but James Gunn is meticulously developing the initial lineup called “Gods and Monsters.” Fans who have followed the DC movies for years are buzzing with speculation. During a recent interview about Creature Commandos on Blue Sky, Gunn hinted at a major villain he hopes to introduce in the DC Universe at some point:
Man-Bat wouldn’t make it into the current project, but he was among the numerous characters I took into account. Admittedly, it would be disheartening if Man-Bat never appeared in the DC Universe.
Here it is. Although it doesn’t provide a definitive confirmation, it appears that Gunn has expressed interest in Man-Bat becoming part of the DC Universe at some stage. Given the expansive nature of the shared universe, encompassing television, films, animation, and video games, there seem to be numerous potential openings for this character. And let’s not forget the widespread popularity of Batman and his mythos.
As a fan, I can’t help but ponder over the potential ways Man-Bat could join the DCU, one of which might be through a spinoff series centering around Batman’s rogues, similar to The Penguin. While they hail from different universes, Colin Farrell’s captivating portrayal in his TV series has certainly rekindled excitement for Matt Reeves’ Batman franchise, even earning him a Golden Globe award. Could the winged Man-Bat be another compelling character to grace this kind of show? Absolutely!
Previously, many superhero ventures were unveiled for the DCU that may potentially include Man-Bat. For example, “The Brave and The Bold” and “Dynamic Duo” primarily revolve around Robin tales. Additionally, there are several animated Batman projects underway, as well as Mike Flanagan’s Clayface movie in development.
Although many aspects of the DCU’s future remain uncertain, James Gunn appears to be an ideal choice for uniting this shared universe. His passion for comics and successful work on films like “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “The Suicide Squad” demonstrate his knack for blending thrilling action sequences with heartfelt, character-driven narratives. Gunn’s upcoming “Superman” film will mark the initial big screen appearance in this new universe, while the first season of “Creature Commandos” is already available to stream on Max. Here’s hoping we witness a faster pace of project releases compared to the 2025 movie lineup.
