Guerrilla Girls Makes Their New York Homecoming in ‘Discrimi-NATION’

In 1985, the anonymous feminist activist group known as Guerrilla Girls stirred up the art community with an inquisitive statement: “What will your art collection’s value be when racism and sexism are no longer trendy?” Their striking poster posed this question against the backdrop of expensive purchases made on a single white male artist, often at the expense of works by artists of color and female artists.

As a passionate gamer, I’m thrilled to share that the legendary collective is back at Hannah Traore Gallery with their thought-provoking exhibition, “Discrimin-NATION: Guerrilla Girls on Bias, Money and Art“. This is a return to the Lower East Side, where it all started for them. With their sharp street wisdom and unique artistic style, this show spans four decades, highlighting their relentless pursuit of exposing persistent inequalities in art across race, class, and gender, under the banner of “behaving badly”. It’s a powerful reminder of the enduring issues we need to address.

A representative from the group stated that Discrimi-NATION is essentially a program focusing on New York City and keeping the art world responsible. Hannah Traore Gallery was the first commercial gallery to engage with them, and it takes courage and respect to organize this exhibition. It’s a privilege and an honor for us to collaborate with her during our 40th anniversary.

They disrupted New York’s art world with their clever data-based approach, and now they’re returning to reignite discussions about representation. By revealing the hidden biases in supposed neutrality, this collective is making an impact on a new group: a vibrant, bold, and continually relevant cry for fairness in the arts.

Discrimi-NATION is now on view in New York through March 29, 2025.
