At his inaugural solo exhibition titled “Good Morning Los Angeles, How Are You?” held at CONTROL GALLERY, artist Paul Flores delves into the complex connection between nostalgia and transformation that characterizes the city of Los Angeles. Unlike a conventional “love letter to the city” portrayal, this show presents a nuanced perspective on a city constantly evolving.
Born and raised in Los Angeles, Flores doesn’t idealize the skyline or sunlit avenues. Instead, his sculptural paintings capture transient instances: the murmur of an area undergoing change, the wafting aroma of grilled food along the street, the ethereal trace of places that have disappeared. His art stirs up the sensation of wandering through a city that feels both familiar and alien to you.
Flores expresses that these works are centered around the individuals, locations, and incidents that have significantly impacted my life here. From gliding through streets that no longer hold their original charm to peaceful afternoons spent with friends, family get-togethers, and the local haunts that are now gone—it’s about cherishing those moments, even as they gradually fade away.
The exhibition at CONTROL Gallery begins on view from February 15, continuing until March 29. For additional details, visit the gallery’s website.
