Following the initial three Indiana Jones films providing ’80s audiences with unforgettable entertainment (and possibly being counted among the best movies from that decade), the film franchise was reborn not once but twice: first in 2008 with Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and then again in 2023 with The Dial of Destiny. Both releases received a mix of positive and negative reviews, but The Dial of Destiny faced additional criticism for its poor box office performance. Recently, Harrison Ford, who plays Indiana Jones himself, has expressed his thoughts on the disappointing reception of The Dial of Destiny, and these candid reflections only serve to endear him even more in my eyes.
In his interviews for “Captain America: Brave New World,” the 35th Marvel film, Harrison Ford casually mentioned “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” to The Wall Street Journal. Unlike expressing disappointment over the movie’s underperformance, Ford, in true form, stated that he remained unfazed by this, expressing that it did not concern him at all.
Life sometimes takes unexpected turns. Originally, I believed there was a different tale to share about Indy’s life. After he faced the repercussions of his path, I yearned for another opportunity to help him, dust off his feet, and thrust him back into the world, slightly weakened, to witness how things unfolded. Looking back, I’m glad I made that film.
In summary, Although “Dial of Destiny” might not have been one of 2023’s top box office hits, Harrison Ford expresses no remorse about being part of it. Set in 1969 following the death of his son Mutt in Vietnam and his separation from Marion Ravenwood, the movie provided an opportunity for Ford to offer a final on-screen adventure for his iconic character, Indiana Jones. While not everyone might have enjoyed it, the film allowed Ford to provide Indy with a fitting conclusion. Moreover, I’m delighted that he started off with “shit happens,” which is exactly the straightforwardness I appreciate and anticipate from Ford.

In a fascinating comparison, director James Mangold equates the ending of Logan with the upcoming Indiana Jones film, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. When asked about the ‘most significant’ thing he could share regarding Indy, Mangold hints at an emotional depth that mirrors the poignancy found in the conclusion of Logan.
It would have been delightful if Indiana Jones had the chance to remain in Ancient Italy, but the director of the Dial of Destiny explained their reasoning for not making that happen.
Disney officially reported that “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” was produced on approximately $295 million, but other sources suggest it was over $300 million. Regardless, due to its global earnings of $384 million, the film can be classified as a commercial flop, ranking second to last in the Indiana Jones series, with “Temple of Doom” taking the bottom spot. Nevertheless, when accounting for inflation and the budget it was made on, there’s no debate that the 1984 movie was financially successful.
Regarding the reception of “Dial of Destiny”, it has earned a 70% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Our critic, Sarah El-Mahmoud, had a particularly favorable opinion when reviewing “Indiana Jones 5”. She awarded it 4 out of 5 stars and expressed that the film “seems to be an affectionate tribute to the series and a triumphant celebration of the iconic character, following the mixed reactions to ‘Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’.” If you fancy revisiting or even watching this movie for the first time, you can stream it with a Disney+ subscription.
Regardless, Harrison Ford’s days as Indiana Jones have come to an end, but he steps into the role of Thunderbolt Ross, previously played by the late William Hurt, in “Captain America: Brave New World” from February 14 onwards. For those seeking fresh content with the iconic character donning a fedora and using a whip, consider giving the new video game “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” a try.
