comedian Will Ferrell playfully jabs at Oscar voters over their decision not to recognize the Netflix documentary titled Will & Harper.
Lately, the actor popped up on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” humorously criticizing the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for overlooking his movie during their nominations.
The journey of Will & Harper revolves around Ferrell and his longtime friend Harper Steele, who set off on a road trip across the country following Ferrell’s discovery that Steele is transitioning as a trans woman. Along their journey, they delve into this new phase in their friendship, offering an intimate glimpse of friendship, personal growth, and transition in a poignant portrayal.
Following host Stephen Colbert’s remark that it was “one of the best documentaries I’ve seen in years,” he inquired about its Oscar nomination.
“We didn’t get it,” Ferrell responded, to which Colbert said, “Fuck the Academy!”
The “Cordially Invited Actor” jokingly commented, “The doc branch is quite the place to be! I wouldn’t recommend spending time there, it’s filled with… less successful individuals. It’d be great if some of them were here tonight: If you’re a part of the doc branch, well played!
Although Will & Harper’s documentary made the shortlist for the best documentary feature film category at the Oscars, it did not receive a nomination. The five documentaries that were nominated instead were “Black Box Diaries,” “No Other Land,” “Porcelain War,” “Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat,” and “Sugarcane.
Ferrell and Steele developed friendship during their collaboration on Saturday Night Live in the 1990s. Ferrell served as a cast member from 1995 to 2002, while Steele held the position of head writer from 1995 to 2008.
Last year, at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, the actor from the movie “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy” shared insights on the beginnings of their documentary road trip with “The Hollywood Reporter.
In his own words, Ferrell described the concept of their conversation as if it were a documentary. He explained that while he didn’t want to take advantage of their friendship, he saw potential in using this format as a unique opportunity for them to delve into the topic at hand. Essentially, he wanted to ask questions about Harper’s experiences, his growth, and gain insights into who he is now compared to before.
