The unusual alliance between Square Enix and Microsoft persists, as whispers suggest that Final Fantasy XVI could potentially appear on Xbox Series platforms. What adds to the surprise is the rumor that Square Enix prefers releasing XVI on Xbox rather than the Switch 2 at this time. Whether this decision is driven by power considerations remains unclear; it will be intriguing to observe if they can adapt this game for the upcoming Nintendo console as well.
According to gaming source IdleSlothVGT (on X), influential figure NateTheHate hints that the debated sixteenth installment of this series will be released soon, with a tentative schedule for the first half of 2025. While we may not see it hit the shelves immediately, Nate suggests this action RPG is on its way. Additionally, Nate implies that fans of Final Fantasy VII Remake can expect to play it on Xbox platforms this year.
Primarily, Nate stated that it’s unlikely Final Fantasy XVI will be released on the Nintendo Switch 2 due to Square Enix focusing on the FF7 Remake and Rebirth for that specific console. If accurate, this speculation is gaining momentum as the FF7 Remake has been frequently associated with Nintendo’s upcoming hardware. Undoubtedly, being able to play that game would certainly make a strong statement about this console.
In recent times, there’s been an effort from Xbox, often jokingly referred to as the third-largest console manufacturer, to collaborate more with Square Enix. After some time, they successfully brought Final Fantasy XIV to their Series systems, enabling players to enjoy one of the best MMOs on their Xbox consoles. Additionally, they’ve managed to release native versions of the Kingdom Hearts games, a feat that the Switch hasn’t achieved yet.
Despite differing opinions about Final Fantasy XVI, there’s no denying that it boasts some of the most stunning visuals among games released this generation. Given its high-end graphics, it’s not surprising that it poses challenges even for Valve’s potent Steam Deck. This might suggest that the game could be too demanding for the Switch 2, although we’ll have to wait and see. For now, we’re simply glad that the system appears capable of running the Final Fantasy VII trilogy smoothly.
