You Won’t Believe What’s Coming to Netflix This Month

The movie adaptation of “Honor Among Thieves,” derived from the widely-loved tabletop role-playing game “Dungeons & Dragons” created by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson in 1974, is set to find its new streaming platform. With a resurgence in game popularity fueled by streamers like Critical Role and Dimension 20, Paramount Pictures aimed to cash in on this success in 2023. Despite not meeting initial box office expectations, there’s optimism that its new online home might spark interest for a possible sequel.

On February 26th, Netflix will be streaming the movie “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves”. This film boasts a stellar ensemble cast including Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Hugh Grant, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, Regé-Jean Page, and a special appearance by Bradley Cooper. The plot of this movie unfolds in the realm of Forgotten Realms, home to most canonical Dungeons & Dragons stories, where a band of bungling thieves are tasked with recovering an ancient artifact from a former comrade to prevent catastrophe. According to the official description:

An appealing crook, together with an unusual group of explorers, embark on a grand theft mission to recover a misplaced artifact. However, their plan takes a perilous turn when they clash with the wrong crowd. The movie ‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ captures the vibrant setting and playful mood of the iconic role-playing game in a humorous and action-packed journey on the silver screen.

As a dedicated cinephile who caught a screening of “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” when it hit theaters in 2023, I can confidently say that this film was nothing short of sensational. To put its success into perspective, Rotten Tomatoes, a trusted source for critic reviews, assigned it an impressive score of 91%. However, the enthusiasm from audiences seemed even more palpable, with a rating of 92% reflecting their overwhelming positive response. In his glowing review for MovieWeb, esteemed critic Julian Roman praised the movie to no end.

An intelligent screenplay, stunning visuals for the banners, and an exceptional camaraderie among the actors perfectly encapsulates the essence of a thrilling fantasy journey on screen. Wise decisions by the filmmakers helped them dodge common pitfalls that have sunk similar productions in the past.”

“The script is sharp, the visual effects for the banners are eye-catching, and the cast has excellent chemistry – all key ingredients for a fantastic adventure fantasy. The filmmakers cleverly sidestepped mistakes common to this genre that have marred previous attempts.

Why ‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves 2’ Never Happened

Although the film, “Honor Among Thieves,” received widespread acclaim from both critics and viewers, it fell short of financial success at the box office. The movie managed to earn $205 million globally, but this amount significantly paled in comparison to Paramount’s expectations for it. Consequently, the dreams of launching a new “Dungeons & Dragons” cinematic series through “Honor Among Thieves” were unfortunately dashed.

Although Paramount seems uninterested, Chris Pine expressed his desire to reprise his role as the tricky bard, Edgin, for a potential sequel. He also hinted that Hasbro might be planning a follow-up for the game IP they own. In his own words: “I’d love to return as Edgin if there’s a sequel, and it seems Hasbro might be preparing for another campaign down the line.

It’s highly likely that we’ll produce another one, given that Hasbro holds the rights. If they can find a financially viable solution, I believe they will proceed with it.

For now, movie fans like myself can give it a shot and check out the upcoming Netflix release of “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” towards the end of this month. Let’s hope we find some thrilling adventures in store!
