Capcom Shuts Down Their Lowest-Performing Resident Evil Game

Following a difficult and turbulent three-year run, the multiplayer third-person PvP shooter Resident Evil: ReVerse will be closed on June 29. This marks the end of the game’s lifespan. If you’ve just learned about it for the first time, don’t worry, many others are in the same boat!

Instead of “Resident Evil: ReVerse was a free bonus for anyone who purchased Resident Evil: Village,” you could say, “Purchasing Resident Evil: Village came with an extra gift — Resident Evil: ReVerse — to celebrate the series’ 25th anniversary. This special edition is a hero-shooter style game that lets players select iconic characters and compete against each other online.

Initially, the idea appeared brilliant, something that might entice devoted Resident Evil enthusiasts. Regrettably, it fell short of anticipation. The game ended up being sparsely populated and uninspiring, resembling more of a placeholder or, even worse, an attempt to cash in on Capcom’s Resident Evil series.

Few players engaged with it, and those who did found little enjoyment.

It was widely criticized by both critics and players that the game’s approach to the PvP multiplayer genre was uninspired. Consequently, Capcom decided to pull the game from digital marketplaces and spent a year trying to rectify its issues. However, it appeared as though the game had been stuck in “Capcom limbo.

Over time, the release of the game occurred, and the developers tackled some problems, such as refining the game’s awkward, cel-shaded visual style to enhance playability. Regrettably, their efforts came at a time when the buzz around Resident Evil had subsided, leaving many players who completed Resident Evil: Village with no recollection of ReVerse.

Starting March 3rd, Resident Evil: ReVerse will no longer be available for purchase from online stores. All downloadable content associated with it will also disappear at the same time. On June 29th, the game’s servers will cease operation, effectively ending support for ReVerse and removing it from any Resident Evil: Village bundle.

Once again, Capcom has attempted to monetize one of their franchises through a multiplayer mode that hasn’t connected with gamers. A similar outcome occurred for Resident Evil: Resistance, another multiplayer game packaged with the Resident Evil 3 Remake. Resistance, an asymmetrical horror title inspired by games like Dead by Daylight and Friday the 13th, initially showed potential but ultimately couldn’t hold a lasting fanbase. The support for the game ceased less than a year after its launch.

Closing Resident Evil: ReVerse suggests that Capcom might need to rethink their strategy when it comes to multiplayer Resident Evil games. Maybe games like Mercenaries or Outbreak could gain more popularity, but for now, these multiplayer attempts seem not to meet the expectations of Resident Evil fans as much as they’d hope.
