The superhero series Invincible, which is back for its third season, has made its first three episodes available on Prime Video. In this new season, Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun) is gearing up for an impending Viltrumite invasion while also taking on the role of a mentor to his newly discovered half-brother, Oliver. Although the main Invincible series primarily focuses on Mark’s journey, some fans and cast members are eager for spinoffs featuring secondary characters. However, creator Robert Kirkman seems hesitant about a potential Rex Splode spinoff.
In a conversation with Collider for the launch of Invincible’s third season, actor Jason Mantzoukas, who voices Rex Splode in the show, expressed his wish for Rex to star in an action-packed spinoff series. When the journalist suggested it, Mantzoukas responded enthusiastically, “Definitely!” He then went on to ask creator Robert Kirkman about the possibility during the premiere. However, Kirkman was not immediately convinced, stating bluntly, “It’s not going to happen.” In Hollywood, it’s often more about who you know than what you know, and Mantzoukas made a direct appeal to Kirkman for the spinoff, similar to Commissioner Gordon contacting Batman. Regrettably, Kirkman was not convinced by the idea at that time.
In a jovial exchange, they debated the prospect of a Rex Splode spinoff series. When Mantzoukas playfully quipped “How bold of you!”, Kirkman wasn’t entirely opposed but expressed reservations about Mantzoukas playing the lead role. He suggested that if Mantzoukas was young enough, perhaps Jason wouldn’t voice the character. Amused by this idea, Mantzoukas responded with a chuckle, “Hold on, what? [Laughs] That’s quite an exclusive proposition.
Could More ‘Invincible’ Spinoffs Happen?
To date, followers of the series Invincible have been given just one spin-off from the main storyline. Unlike many contemporary shows that extend the narrative by giving significant side characters their own multi-season spinoffs or films, Invincible opts for a more limited approach. In 2023, Amazon Prime Video announced a one-time special episode titled Invincible: Atom Eve, focusing on the character voiced by Gillian Jacobs. Directed by Haylee Herrick and co-written by Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley, this spinoff delves into Atom Eve’s early days as a superhero. The special episode was highly appreciated by fans, leaving us all eager for more similar episodes in the future.
After the airing of an episode in 2023, Robert Kirkman hinted at the possibility of additional specials being produced. “It’s a convenient platform to delve deeper into a character,” he said. “So it might be that we’ll do something else in the future.” However, there is one significant obstacle, as Kirkman added:
However, it’s important to remember that we need to produce these large eight-episode seasons within a manageable timeframe. If we don’t, there may be an uprising among the team, and they might decide to leave the project altogether.
Every week, fresh episodes of “Invincible” are set to drop. The third season has been a massive success among critics, boasting a whopping 99% score on Rotten Tomatoes. What’s more exciting for fans is that this time around, there won’t be the inconvenient mid-season pause like what happened in Season 2, which could potentially disrupt the flow of the storyline.
