English Teacher Season 2 Set for Production Amid Controversy

As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but express my excitement over the possibility of another season for the underrated gem, “English Teacher,” produced by FX and Hulu. With an almost flawless rating, it comes as no surprise that its renewal for Season 2 is just around the corner. This quirky comedy series premiered last September with only eight episodes, yet managed to garner such overwhelmingly positive reviews that production on additional seasons is imminent, starting later this month.

In this series, the creator and executive producer, Brian Jordan Alvarez, takes on the role of Evan Marquez, a high school teacher in Austin, Texas who happens to be openly gay. Evan navigates the conservative work environment while dealing with the usual troubles of lazy students, irritated colleagues, and angry parents. Co-starring is Stephanie Koenig as Gwen Sanders, Evan’s colleague and friend, Enrico Colantoni as Grant Moretti, a principal worn down by the job, and Sean Patton as Markie, a gym teacher who can be inappropriate but surprisingly endearing.

Regarding English Teacher, it garnered a dedicated yet specialized audience, but was highly acclaimed by critics. The series received four Independent Spirit Award nominations, including one for Best New Scripted Series, and maintains an exceptional 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Although FX has not publicly announced a second season, TV Line reports suggest that the production is close to securing the show’s continuation, with filming set to recommence later this month.

Controversy May Put English Teacher‘s Second Season in Jeopardy

The highly anticipated first appearance of the English Teacher faced a significant setback due to a major scandal. A past colleague and co-star, Jon Ebeling, claimed that Alvarez had sexually assaulted him while they were working together on the 2016 web series “The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo”. According to Ebeling’s account, Alvarez forced at least one sexual interaction, which served as inspiration for episodes two and three of the series. Furthermore, an additional non-consensual encounter is said to have taken place during the filming of those specific episodes on set.

Regarding the accusations, Alvarez has stated that all interactions were consensual and labeled Ebeling as a frequent manipulator. This perspective was endorsed by Koenig, Alvarez’s co-star from the English Teacher series. However, individuals who knew Alvarez during his time at USC presented an alternative image of the actor and writer – one that encompasses a past history of drug and alcohol abuse, as well as claims of assault. Alvarez has also refuted these accusations, stating he has no memory of them.

Despite Ebeling submitting a complaint to the Los Angeles Police Department and the Screen Actors Guild, no inquiry or court case has transpired as of now. Consequently, it appears that English Teacher is not currently at risk of being canceled; however, this situation could shift if Alvarez encounters additional allegations, or if evidence from Ebeling’s report substantiates the claims. Nevertheless, the show’s widespread acclaim and positive reception might enable it to carry on, regardless. It’s worth noting that Ebeling’s accusations have garnered limited attention in the public eye, thereby preserving English Teacher‘s relatively unblemished reputation. In such a case, FX would find it challenging to terminate the series unless there was an urgent need to do so.
