It’s always enjoyable to discover instances where celebrities are truly friendly with their fellow actors outside of work, especially in an industry where off-camera drama and public criticisms among celebrities are common. What makes it even better is when stars like Justin Timberlake, Andy Samberg (from the “Dick in a Box” skit), and Andrew Garfield (who later became Spider-Man) are involved. That’s why I was really excited to come across an old video featuring all three that has been circulating recently.
Posted to their Instagram, Access Hollywood shared a throwback clip of a Justin Timberlake and Andrew Garfield interview from when the two co-starred in 2010’s The Social Network in 2010. In the clip, Timberlake was absolutely floored by the knowledge that Garfield would be the next big-screen Peter Parker. The initial interaction was funny enough, but it’s when Timberlake asked about writing the theme song where the hilarious shout-out to Andy Samberg happened.

Although presented playfully, the notion is just as intriguing as it is entertaining. This is primarily due to my mental picture of the end credits sequence from ‘The Amazing Spiderman’ reminiscent of their famous SNL skit, ‘Dick in a Box.’ The interview you refer to happened in 2010, following Samberg’s concert debacle with Timberlake.
Lately, Samberg has performed a sketch with Charli XCX that is as popular as his iconic ‘Dick in a Box’ sketch, though it was almost more explicit according to Samberg himself. Meanwhile, Garfield is noticing the resurgence of clips from The Social Network on the internet, and he’s certainly conscious of the TikTok trend linked to one of his memorable lines from the Academy Award-winning film.
Of course, whenever The Social Network comes up in conversation, it’s important to recall the ongoing disappointment felt by many, including myself, over Andrew Garfield not receiving an Oscar nomination for his exceptional portrayal. There were certainly ample grounds for both him and Timberlake to be acknowledged for their outstanding performances.
The video’s vibe reminded me of hanging out with friends, authentic without being overly theatrical or staged for the camera. That’s probably why it brought a smile to my face, not just due to the SNL skit reference, but because it seemed genuine and relatable. To add to that, I didn’t realize Timberlake was such a big Spider-man fan, and learning this has increased my admiration for him even more.
