As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that “The Green Mile,” a captivating supernatural prison drama from 1999, is experiencing a resurgence on the free streaming platform Tubi. This Stephen King adaptation showcases one of Tom Hanks’ underappreciated performances at its finest. Remarkably, this film currently ranks third on Tubi’s Top 10 list of their most-watched movies!
Titled “The Green Mile” and helmed by Frank Darabont, the movie follows a team of prison guards stationed at Cold Mountain Penitentiary’s death row, affectionately known as “The Green Mile.” Captain Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) oversees this group who then encounter John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan), a new inmate sentenced to death for a heinous crime. Despite his guilty verdict, Coffey doesn’t act like a typical convict and insists on his innocence. As Edgecomb comes to understand, Coffey has an extraordinary ability to heal people. To preserve the surprise for those who haven’t yet watched this acclaimed film, we’ll stop there.
In The Green Mile, Tom Hanks shares the screen with David Morse, Michael Clarke Duncan, Sam Rockwell, Patricia Clarkson, Barry Pepper, Harry Dean Stanton, William Sadler, and Gary Sinise, among others. This film is one of two prison dramas that Darabont adapted from a Stephen King novel; the other one being the critically-adored The Shawshank Redemption.
In 1999, a standout year for films like “The Matrix,” “The Sixth Sense,” and “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace,” the movie in question was incredibly successful. It earned over $286 million at the box office from an initial investment of $60 million, and it even received four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. Notably, when it comes to Stephen King adaptations, “The Green Mile” is often regarded as one of the best. In fact, the author himself once stated that Darabont’s script was the best film adaptation he had ever read.
‘The Green Mile‘ is a Superb But Curiously Polarizing Stephen King Adaptation
As a devoted fan, I must admit that among all adaptations of Stephen King’s work, The Green Mile is undoubtedly one of my favorites. However, it doesn’t seem to be everyone’s cup of tea when it comes to Stephen King films.
What often seems to challenge viewers the most is the length of The Green Mile. With a running time of three hours and nine minutes, it is arguably the longest movie based on a Stephen King book, excluding the various TV miniseries and both parts of Andrés Muschietti’s IT. This extended duration might be a hurdle for some.
The movie’s duration faced significant criticism, as certain commentators argued that it slowed down the film’s rhythm. Notably, renowned critic Roger Ebert pointed out the film’s length in his review, yet he believed the development of the world and characters made the 3-hour runtime acceptable.
The film spans approximately three hours and fifteen minutes. I found the extended duration beneficial, as it allowed for a realistic portrayal of prison months and years. Stephen King, often criticized as just a bestseller, possesses in his finest works some of Dickens’ ability to create immersive worlds filled with vivid, unique, and intricately drawn characters.
Regardless of the situation, we’ll go along with King himself deeming the script as one of his finest and most faithful adaptations. Just keep in mind that if you choose to watch it on Tubi, your viewing experience will be extended due to the requirement to sit through ads without the option to skip them. However, rest assured that The Green Mile is definitely worth the wait.
