Recently, the use of AI has sparked intense debate, particularly among creative professionals who express concern over their original work being utilized without credit or permission to teach AI systems to replicate unique artistic abilities.
Given the ongoing debate about artificial intelligence’s role in contemporary entertainment, Harrison Ford praises the new Indiana Jones game for not relying on AI to “rob his essence.
Harrison Ford on The Great Circle
In a conversation with the Wall Street Journal, Ford praises Troy Baker’s portrayal of Indy in “The Great Circle,” emphasizing that studios don’t necessarily need artificial intelligence to resurrect characters. Ford states, “It doesn’t require artificial intelligence to capture my essence; it can be achieved for a small fee using great ideas and skill.” He further commends Baker’s performance, asserting that AI wasn’t needed to create such a masterpiece.
On different occasions, actors have successfully taken over iconic roles previously held by Ford. For instance, in 2018, Alden Ehrenreich (Oppenheimer) assumed the role of a young Han Solo in “Solo: A Star Wars Story.” Many fans will agree that Ehrenreich effectively portrayed the character, making it his own, even though he doesn’t physically resemble Ford.
AI and De-Aging
Despite Troy Baker portraying Indiana Jones in “The Great Circle”, Harrison Ford hasn’t shied away from utilizing AI technology to rejuvenate or depict younger versions of him throughout his career. The latest film, “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny“, features an opening sequence with a youthful Indy, which was created using CG, and Marvel Studios employed digital effects to transform Ford into the Red Hulk in “Captain America: Brave New World“.
In a remarkable feat, even the Star Wars co-stars alongside Ford aren’t immune to the magic of digital de-aging. They’ve pulled off this trick with Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) in The Book of Boba Fett and The Mandalorian, and Rogue One accomplished it earlier by featuring a youthful Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia at the film’s end.

Currently, we’re observing a consistent increase in AI utilization within creative domains. While this technology can help cut costs, it has faced criticism due to instances where it’s been employed as a substitute for human artists. Just last week, the Fantastic Four: First Steps teaser posters drew controversy over what viewers suspected were AI-created visuals.
Currently, there’s a strong belief among some, including Ford and parts of the entertainment industry, that Artificial Intelligence has yet to surpass the talent of real artists in terms of performance. It’s hoped that those making decisions in studios will understand this truth quickly.
The adventurous game, “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle,” can currently be played on PCs and Xbox Series X|S, with a scheduled launch on PlayStation 5 towards the end of this year.
