Note: Caution! This discussion contains spoilers for the Matlock episode “Crash Helmets On” (episode 1×10). If you’re not up-to-date, consider yourself warned.
Friends, it’s possible that “Matlock” could bring one of the most thrilling additions to the 2025 TV lineup – excluding reality TV or awards show chaos. If we ignore those aspects, Kathy Bates’ midseason comeback certainly addressed a cliffhanger and simultaneously proposed a fresh theory about who the main antagonist could be on Jacobson Moore’s set.
This week’s episode took Leah Lewis’ character Sarah on an emotional journey with unexpected turns. If you haven’t jumped aboard the Matlock train yet, a Paramount+ subscription might be just what you need to get up to speed swiftly. For those already on board, let’s delve into this week’s case folder.
Sarah May Have Become Matty Matlock’s New Sworn Enemy
If you’ve ever been this close to achieving a professional milestone, just to have it taken away at the final moment, you can empathize with how Sarah felt at the end of Episode 1×10, “Crash Helmets On”. Originally led to believe she would get her first case to argue by Matty, those responsibilities were swiftly handed over to Billy (David Del Rio) instead.
Essentially, our clever hero resorted to deception to swap the recording devices because Matlock’s shocking finale revelation inadvertently landed in the wrong hands. This move, however, cost Sarah a significant chance to shine on Team You Three and potentially secure a well-deserved victory. Despite her apology, Sarah’s colleague, Ms. Matlock, was met with a response that suggested she was not entirely remorseful.
You will be. Because you will regret making an enemy out of me.
Contrary to what others may suggest about potential issues with Matlock’s tone, I believe the opposite has been clearly demonstrated in recent episodes. Mostly, we’ve observed Leah Lewis being either deeply engrossed in her work or showing affection towards her IT department crush, Kira. However, two moments in “Crash Helmets On” caught me off guard with their emotional impact. The second instance was the chilling threat, but it was the first one that tugged at my heartstrings this week.
The Timing For Matlock’s Twist Couldn’t Have Been Worse
Among the two cases featured on the weekly episodes of Matlock this time was a lawsuit concerning a nursing home resident who died mysteriously from an apparent stroke. This signified a change in the CBS series’ formula, as the first few episodes seemed to follow a familiar, almost predictable pattern for Matlock.
To elaborate, Matty’s role was often to blend in as a decoy, covertly exploring the social environment of Tranquil Pines Nursing Home. This was instrumental in setting up the scene where Leah Lewis’ character performed “Walkin’ After Midnight” for a resident suffering from dementia.
It’s revealed that Sarah had a grandmother who struggled with a cognitive disorder, and interestingly, singing helped to soothe her. However, the tale becomes more poignant as we learn that when Sarah graduated from college, her grandmother no longer recognized her.
Once more, Matlock manages to elevate a legal procedural into something far superior. Typically, it’s a series that’s centered around conspiracies or espionage, yet maintains a lighthearted tone with occasional rough patches. The recent episode left a deep scar, as Sarah Yang suffered an injustice at the hands of her grandmother’s memory for the final time.
In real life, this suggests that Miss Lewis and her fellow actors are equally impressive as Kathy Bates’ award-nominated portrayal. However, at Jacobson Moore, it likely means she’ll align with Julian (Jason Ritter) in the upcoming conflict between him and his estranged ex-wife Olympia (Skye P. Marshall).
In Matlock’s world filled with drama, the upcoming change in one spouse’s status forces another to leave town, and there’s a lot at stake. Regardless of which side you’re on, it’s clear that Billy should get rid of that awful belt buckle he wears after dumping someone. The court is adjourned until next Thursday, when Matlock will be back with “A Traitor in Thine Own House,” a title that seems oddly harmless given the circumstances.
