Introducing Parthenope: a captivating character born from the sea, seldom venturing far from the coastline. Contrary to the legendary Siren of Greek mythology, this Parthenope is a contemporary figure brought to life by Oscar-winning director Paolo Sorrentino in his latest A24 film, now showing in U.S. cinemas. One glance at her lead actress, Celeste Dalla Porta, and you might find yourself spellbound – a theme that resonates throughout the reviews of numerous film critics focusing on Parthenope. With the assistance of interpreter Lilia Pino Blouin, MovieWeb recently interviewed the rising star of Parthenope, Celeste Dalla Porta, who discussed her feelings about how many critics have highlighted her powerful screen presence in the title role.
In truth, I feel that the Parthenope project aimed to honor this captivating figure. This beauty isn’t merely skin-deep or aesthetic; it encompasses a depth born from her diverse roles and interactions with numerous individuals who shaped her into the person she became.” Dalla Porta shared this insight with us. She further elaborated:
In essence, creating this character was a collaborative effort by numerous individuals, resulting in a unique charm we wanted to highlight. This appeal, you could say, embodies the spirit of youth – the sense of boundless energy, potential, and an open-ended future full of possibilities and opportunities. So, the beauty portrayed in this film can be seen as a reflection of the limitless power one has yet to unleash.
Dalla Porta admitted, feeling a bit awkward in response to the question, this movie seems to revolve around a captivating lady. However, it’s more than just her beauty; it’s about the hurdles she encounters due to her good looks and the preconceived notions others have about her intelligence. Since society sometimes doubts the intellect of beautiful women, she strives to prove them wrong by being intelligent as well.
Becoming Neapolitan on Film
Born in Naples, Director Sorrentino chose this city as the main setting for his latest film. The protagonist, Dalla Porta, strongly identifies with her birthplace throughout the narrative. Interestingly, the mythological figure of Parthenope is closely associated with Naples historically. In an exclusive interview, Dalla Porta shared her insights on embodying her character and exploring Parthenope’s profound bond with her hometown.
As I delved into understanding this character, I found myself immersed in the heart of Neapolitan life – a unique privilege afforded to actors like me. It’s a liberating experience, as if I had been born amidst the vibrant streets of this extraordinary city called Naples. Such a city is truly a wonder to behold.
Now,” said Dalla Porta, “I find myself in New York, and I can’t help but notice similarities between this city and Naples. There seems to be a powerful energy in both places that is fueled by the vibrancy of their residents. You can sense a sense of freedom as you stroll through the streets, whether it’s in Naples or New York.
Dalla Porta stated, “I deeply immersed myself in the unique sense of freedom experienced on bustling, multicultural city streets, similar to what one finds in Naples. Exploring Naples was like embarking on a profound journey for me, both an honor and a significant responsibility. I fervently hope that everyone has the opportunity to experience this remarkable city at least once in their lives for various reasons.
Looking forward to catching it as well! The film “Parthenope,” produced by A24, is set to hit U.S. cinemas on February 7, 2025.
