Bowen Yang has been gaining recognition in the past few years and will continue to bring laughter through 2025 with his roles in SNL’s milestone 50th anniversary special and the upcoming season itself, which boasts a star-studded lineup. The favorable reviews for Wedding Banquet show that Yang’s popularity transcends any single project he’s involved in. Despite often being the subject of jokes beyond his control (as discussed on Las Culturistas), he remains uncertain about how his meme-worthiness emerged, but it’s evident thanks to his impressive dancing skills demonstrated in Wicked.
The 34-year-old attended Sundance to promote the Andrew Ahn-directed Wedding Banquet and caught up with IMDb to address his popularity online. Via the site’s Instagram account, the Awkwafina is Nora from Queens alum weighed in on the virality of his dance moves during the song, “What is this Feeling,” and spoke to the shock that came with it, as well as how thankful he is that his whole body wasn’t seen. In his words:
I never anticipated creating a viral dance trend on social media, but it turned out to be rather serendipitous that the moves required minimal upper arm movement since I was holding a book throughout. Essentially, I found myself adapting the dance steps to fit around my book-reading session, if you will.
In simpler terms, the actor portraying The Monkey King may not be incorrect about the limited choreography, as its meme potential could have been significantly increased given his talents. Overall, the standout moment in the clip for me is his expression when it pauses (which might be the reason why that snippet became popular online).
Later, Bowen Yang pointed out the astonishing fact that viewers have been self-teaching the dance moves seen in the film. He emphasized his own difficulty in learning from a professional and the challenges he faced in getting every step correct. Yang expressed this idea by saying:
“It’s amazing how people are teaching themselves the dances from the movie, but I can tell you it wasn’t easy for me to learn these moves from a pro, and hitting all the right notes was quite a struggle.
It’s hard for me to envision individuals mastering concepts from movie scenes, as I myself struggled when a professional dance instructor attempted to guide me using those same clips. To put it mildly, my success rate wasn’t impressive.
The dancing in the film and fan-made videos mirroring the choreography has left me quite amazed, especially Yang’s moves. I can’t wait to see what the Pfannee actor has in store next, given the high anticipation surrounding the upcoming Wicked: For Good, slated for release in November 2025 on the movie schedule.
