Warning! Spoilers ahead for the series finale of 9-1-1: Lone Star, “Homecoming.”
Among the numerous shows concluding in 2025, the final episode of “9-1-1: Lone Star” aired on Monday, February 3 and it was gripping. The previews hinted at an apocalyptic scenario with an asteroid threatening Austin, and the storyline featured the entire 126 team being injured in the field due to a nuclear accident. Fortunately, by the end, everyone survived and found their peaceful resolutions. Interestingly, Rob Lowe proposed an unfortunate concept for the finale that I’m relieved didn’t materialize.
What Was Rob Lowe’s Idea For 9-1-1: Lone Star’s Series Finale?
In the final episode, it appeared as though Owen had perished following an explosion caused by shrapnel while attempting to halt the nuclear reactor. However, it was eventually unveiled that he had miraculously survived and later secured a position as fire chief in New York City. The finale concluded with a sense of completeness for Owen, considering he initially departed from New York to reside in Austin and manage a firehouse; eventually, he chose to leave Austin to oversee the entire department in New York. Notably, Rob Lowe shared with TVLine that his preference was for a more somber but emotional farewell for his character.
I fully proposed the idea that Owen would meet a dramatic end, similar to a heart-wrenching hero’s farewell. This scenario involves Owen passing away, followed by a solemn yet respectful procession through the hospital halls, with everyone around clapping in tribute.
It was unusual that none of the main characters in 9-1-1: Lone Star, a procedural show, were ever written off. Although some supporting characters did die, both Owen and Tommy survived despite their dire circumstances. In Owen’s case, it seems like the decision to keep him alive was the right choice.
Why I’m Glad 9-1-1: Lone Star Didn’t Use The Pitch
Although Rob Lowe’s proposed ending might have been suitable, I’m relieved it didn’t occur. Firstly, Owen has already grappled with the aftermath of 9/11 and the lung cancer that ensued. Beyond his tumultuous past, there’s the matter of his son T.K., who had previously lost a parent and was close to relapsing. It’s hard to imagine what could have befallen the young man if he had also lost his father. Moreover, even Rob Lowe himself acknowledged that it would be more appropriate for Owen to determine his future after rebuilding the 126 firehouse, and I wholeheartedly concur with this sentiment.
Instead of letting him depart at sunset, how about we depict him setting off towards an eastward sunrise instead? He fulfilled the core purpose of the series – he transformed the 126 into a close-knit family, and revitalized his own family as well. His mission has been accomplished. Now, it’s time for Owen to ponder about what lies ahead in his next chapter.
It’s fascinating to ponder that instead of being buried six feet under, Owen is currently in New York, managing the fire department. He’s essentially repeating for the NYFD what he did for the 126, and it seems like an ideal conclusion for him. In all honesty, after everything he endured, a happy ending was well-deserved for him, as well as everyone else.
Despite its conclusion, it remains unfortunate that “Lone Star” has come to an end. However, given the open-ended nature of its finale, there’s always a chance the characters might reappear on their original series or the upcoming spinoff of “9-1-1”. For the time being, you can enjoy all five seasons of “LS” by subscribing to Hulu.
