Among the positive outcomes from Disney purchasing the “Star Wars” franchise is an abundance of fresh content being consistently released. Since the acquisition, numerous “Star Wars” initiatives have emerged, and although some fans may express dissatisfaction with Disney’s interpretation of George Lucas’ cherished franchise, many others are satisfied. To date, Disney has produced successful films, TV series, comic books, and more. Over time, they have also announced numerous upcoming projects, though not all have made it to the screen yet.
Ewan McGregor has hinted at a potential second season for “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” but as of now, it hasn’t been confirmed. On the other hand, “Star Wars: A Droid Story” appears to be on hold, with no updates since February 2021. Despite some projects getting scrapped, like those from Rian Johnson and Taika Waititi, others are still in development. These include additional seasons for certain Disney+ series and upcoming theatrical movies.
Disney has been reducing its output as of late, including the cancellation of “Star Wars: Acolyte” due to low viewership and high production costs. However, there are numerous future “Star Wars” projects on the horizon, with only a handful having confirmed release dates. The majority may take several years to complete. Here’s a rundown of upcoming “Star Wars” movies and TV series set to be released in the coming years; however, patience will be required as some won’t arrive for quite some time.
Star Wars: Andor Season 2
The second season of “Star Wars: Andor” will premiere on Disney+ on April 22, 2025. In the first season finale, the rebellion ignited as our main character, having escaped from an Imperial prison, became involved. A scene after the credits hinted that the items they were constructing in prison were components of the Death Star’s superlaser. This connection to “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” is chilling since it was this laser that ultimately results in the demise of Cassian Andor (played by Diego Luna) during the Battle of Scarif.
During the making of “Andor” Season 2, Disney chose to keep the storyline under wraps, which is typical for their productions, particularly those in the “Star Wars” universe. However, some details have leaked to the enthusiasts. In November 2024, Disney released a teaser trailer indicating that Season 2 would arrive in 2025. Regrettably, the trailer primarily highlighted other franchise projects such as “Skeleton Crew,” providing only brief glimpses of Season 2.
This scene indicates Andor possibly pilfering a TIE Fighter model reminiscent of an Avenger from “Star Wars” lore. He engages in dialogue with Luthen Rael (played by Stellan Skarsgård). The final frame suggests K-2SO (portrayed by Alan Tudyk) may have been reconfigured to serve the budding rebellion against the Empire. The teaser also hints at what seems like the Ghorman Massacre, a pivotal incident that ignited the galaxy’s rebellion.
Star Wars: Visions Season 3
The production of the third installment for the “Star Wars: Visions” series is moving forward and is expected to release in 2025. This animated anthology series has traditionally rolled out new episodes every two years, so fans don’t have to wait too long between volumes. Volume 1 of this captivating series already offers a rich tapestry of Star Wars lore, with a questionable lightsaber technique showcased in “Ahsoka” being one example. We can hope for more high-quality content when the third volume debuts on Disney+ in 2025.
Disney shared news about Volume 3 of an upcoming animated project in November 2024, on a platform now known as X (previously Twitter). The announcement simply included the title, with eight logos of international animation studios and production companies displayed below. As “Star Wars: Visions” operates outside the established narrative, the creative teams have the freedom to introduce any characters or scenarios they prefer, which was effective in the first two volumes. It appears that the format will remain consistent, promising more of the same exciting content for fans in the future.
A variety of companies showcased their distinct approaches when crafting the episodes for Volume 1, such as “The Ninth Jedi,” “The Twins,” “The Duel,” and Kinema Citrus’ “The Village Bride.” These were all submitted by Disney for Oscar consideration. Until we get a glimpse of the upcoming volume in 2025, it’s hard to predict what awaits us. However, considering the high acclaim that “Star Wars: Visions” received with a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, fans might be eager to explore off-canon stories again in the distant galaxy of Star Wars.
The Mandalorian & Grogu
In cinemas on May 22, 2026, you’ll find the upcoming “Star Wars” movie titled “The Mandalorian & Grogu.” This film is a collaborative effort between Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau, both serving as its writers and directors. Their combined skills in storytelling and direction have been hailed as among the best to work on this franchise. The movie represents the culmination of all New Republic projects since the debut of “The Mandalorian.” Alongside Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin, you’ll see Sigourney Weaver, Jonny Coyne portraying an Imperial Warlord, Jeremy Allen White as Rotta the Hutt, and more.
Originally, it was intended to proceed with a fourth season of “The Mandalorian,” but the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes in 2023 disrupted Lucasfilm’s original plans. As a result, the focus shifted from television production to a feature film, which was officially announced in January 2024. This suggests that the movie may draw from the scripts for Favreau and Filoni’s Season 4 and incorporate those elements into the film, set shortly after the conclusion of Season 3.
Information is still scarce, but it seems probable that Katee Sackhoff’s Bo-Katan Kryze and Rosario Dawson’s Ahsoka Tano will make an appearance. Potential additional characters could include the Armorer (Emily Swallow), Peli Motto (Amy Sedaris), Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen), Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison). The storyline remains uncertain, but it might involve the Mandalorian and Grogu facing off against Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) alongside Ezra Bridger (Eman Esfandi) and various characters from previous Disney+ series.
Star Wars: Ahsoka Season 2
The series titled “Star Wars: Ahsoka” started being developed in 2024 and is scheduled to commence filming in April 2025. This upcoming season will bring several characters that were previously only animated to live-action and it takes place during the New Republic era. Ahsoka, who has left the Jedi Order, doesn’t identify as a Jedi anymore but continues to train Sabine Wren (portrayed by Natasha Liu Bordizzo). The main plot revolves around tracking down Grand Admiral Thrawn with the ultimate goal of finding Ezra Bridger somewhere far away in the galaxy.
Although a specific launch date hasn’t been announced yet, it’s anticipated that “Ashoka” Season 2 may premiere around 2026. Given Dave Filoni’s commitment to both “The Mandalorian & Grogu” and the scripts for this series, there’s speculation that “Ahsoka” Season 2 might align with that movie’s timeline. This could mean the series might even come out before the film, potentially in April 2026. Filoni, who is the sole writer for the show, finds the task demanding but is eager about what lies ahead in Season 2.
There are strong indications suggesting that Anakin Skywalker, played by Hayden Christensen, might reappear in Season 2. In the closing scene of the first season, we see him as a noble Force Spirit, observing his ex-Padawan. Although Christensen has not officially confirmed his return, he hinted to Entertainment Weekly that there could be a continued connection between Anakin and his character, implying that Anakin might still be around in spirit.
Dave Filoni’s New Republic-era film
As Lucasfilm’s Chief Creative Officer, Dave Filoni has played a significant role in shaping the Star Wars franchise. Not only has he created numerous shows, but he’s also involved with “The Mandalorian & Grogu.” Jon Favreau is leading that particular project, but Filoni will have his own director’s chair for an upcoming movie set in the New Republic era. This unnamed Star Wars project by Filoni aims to connect the various narratives seen in “The Mandalorian,” “The Book of Boba Fett,” “Ahsoka,” and similar stories.
In June 2024, Filoni shared insights about his writing process in a conversation with John Horowitz on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast. He explained that since he’s been working on [“Ahsoka” Season 2], ideas have fallen into place, and he now has a clearer vision of where the story is headed. He went on to say that he has an opening scene that he finds quite compelling; he’s really looking forward to developing it further because he’s so excited about its potential.
In 2023, Filoni referred to his upcoming movie as a synthesis of all his previous work set in the New Republic era, which is a significant amount of material. He expressed to Empire, “For me, a cinematic experience should embody a grand concept – a pivotal event in the time period that alters the course of events.” Regrettably, beyond Filoni’s statements, little else is known about the actual content or release date of the project. Given the current timeline, it wouldn’t be until 2027 or later.
Rey Skywalker Sequel
Among the major updates regarding upcoming “Star Wars” productions is the announcement of a new movie and possible trilogy centered around Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey Skywalker. The conclusion of “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” saw Rey assuming the renowned Skywalker name following her burial of Luke Skywalker’s (Mark Hamill) and Leia Organa’s (Carrie Fisher) lightsabers on Tatooine at the Lars homestead. This move was met with some disapproval by a significant portion of the fanbase, but it also served to conclude the Skywalker Saga by acknowledging the legacy that name embodies.
In spite of some fans voicing disapproval, Lucasfilm is pressing ahead with the character, and it was revealed in 2023 that Daisy Ridley would reprise her role in a standalone movie. This film, helmed by director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, will be titled “New Jedi Order.” The story unfolds 15 years post the events of “The Rise of Skywalker,” with Rey leading a new squad of Jedi apprentices. In an interview with AlloCiné, Ridley described the project as an exciting journey into the “Star Wars” universe, offering a fresh perspective on the continuing story.
In January 2025, it was reported by The Hollywood Reporter that George Nolfi, who wrote “Oceans 12,” had been assigned to script a movie that had previously been put on hold for an unknown duration. This is the fourth person to work on the script, with delays in the production process being a significant factor. Meanwhile, Rey, whose projects were announced by The Hollywood Reporter in November 2024, might appear in multiple productions. However, details about these projects are scarce, and there seems to be disagreement within regarding how to present the character effectively.
Simon Kinberg’s new Star Wars trilogy
During the production process of Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s standalone film about Rey Skywalker, tension emerged when it was announced that Simon Kinberg would direct a new Star Wars trilogy. This is where disagreements over how to portray Rey arose, and although nothing has been confirmed yet, there’s speculation that Rey might also appear in Kinberg’s trilogy. Following this announcement, Lucasfilm contradicted the idea that Kinberg’s trilogy would continue the Skywalker Saga, which ended with “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
In the end, that movie positioned Rey as the galaxy’s last Jedi, adopting the Skywalker name to pay tribute to Luke and Leia. It appears that Kinberg’s first film could be released on December 17, 2027, since “New Jedi Order” seems a stronger contender for the December 18, 2026 slot. However, neither release date is final as both films are still in their early stages of production.
As a die-hard Star Wars fan, I’m thrilled to be part of the exclusive circle privy to the intricacies of an upcoming project. Simon Kinberg, with his extensive background in the “Star Wars” universe, having worked on “Star Wars: Rebels” and consulted for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” brings a wealth of expertise to the table.
Should the rumors be true about Rey serving as the main character, these films could potentially delve into the lives of students within her newly formed Jedi Order. However, this is all speculation at this point.
Shawn Levy’s Star Wars movie
Back in November 2022, it was announced that Shawn Levy would be working on a new “Star Wars” movie. Given his previous work with Disney as the director of “Deadpool & Wolverine,” it wasn’t shocking that he’d be entrusted with steering a spaceship through the galaxy after the success of that film, even though the announcement was made before its release. The popularity of “Deadpool & Wolverine” probably secured Levy’s role, as additional details about the project, such as casting decisions, surfaced in January 2025.
As I sit here engrossed in my latest gaming session, my heart skips a beat as I read the recent buzz about Ryan Gosling potentially joining the cast of the upcoming “Star Wars” movie. This project has been brewing for over two years now, and Gosling’s star power could definitely bring it to new heights. His outstanding performance in the 2023 blockbuster “Barbie,” which garnered him an Academy Award nod, is a testament to his talent.
Although specifics about the movie are scarce, we do know that it won’t be tied to the Skywalker Saga or serve as the beginning of a new trilogy or saga. It’s an exciting departure from the traditional “Star Wars” storyline, and I can hardly wait to see what they have in store for us!
Instead, Levy is working on a solo film, which could include various characters and elements – details remain scarce as of January 2025. Levy has been tight-lipped about the movie’s storyline and its placement within the timeline, but during an interview with John Horowitz on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, he mentioned, “I aimed to create something that felt authentic to me, in terms of tone and characters, so I believe there is definitely an influence from The Force and a connection to something greater than our individual identities.
James Mangold’s Jedi Origins film
Director James Mangold is set to helm a new “Star Wars” movie titled unofficially as “Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi.” This film is positioned before the storyline of the Skywalker Saga, and takes place millennia prior to “Star Wars: A New Hope.” Rather than revolving around a well-established Jedi Order, this movie will explore the initial discovery of the Force, which may delve into the origins and emergence of the Order.
In an interview with MovieWeb, Mangold shared insights about the upcoming ‘Star Wars’ project, which is set apart from existing stories. He explained, “This ‘Star Wars’ film will be set 25,000 years before any other ‘Star Wars’ movie. It’s a world and a playground I’ve long dreamed of exploring and was captivated by as a young teen. At this stage, I’m not particularly keen on being constrained by so much established lore that it feels almost unyielding, making it difficult to satisfy everyone.
In this scenario, Mangold is granted the liberty he craves to create something entirely fresh and innovative. Given that it’s not linked to the Skywalker saga, even the more critical segment of the fanbase may find little reason to criticize. The director stands poised to experience a level of creative control unprecedented in the franchise, save for George Lucas. The exact release date remains undetermined, but filming is scheduled to commence around 2025, potentially aligning it with Disney’s December 17, 2027 launch date.
Patty Jenkins’ Star Wars: Rogue Squadron
Among the upcoming “Star Wars” productions, none have been as uncertain as Patty Jenkins’ “Star Wars: Rogue Squadron.” The movie was initially announced in 2020 with a planned release date of Christmas 2023. “Rogue Squadron” is inspired by the eponymous team, which made its debut in a 1998 Nintendo 64 game. Wedge Antilles (Denis Lawson) founded this squadron during the era of the Original Trilogy, but its production has been delayed for some time.
Jenkins shared her story about “Rogue Squadron” and its connection to “Wonder Woman 3.” Originally, she had paused work at Lucasfilm to concentrate on the third installment, but since “Wonder Woman 1984” didn’t succeed as expected, the film was scrapped. This unexpected turn of events allowed Jenkins more time for writing a script for “Rogue Squadron,” which seems to be progressing. However, she emphasized in a post on X that it’s not certain yet, and “Rogue Squadron” is only a potential project until it goes through the whole development process.
In March 2024, The Hollywood Reporter disclosed that Jenkins had resumed work on the project, focusing on the script. On a podcast named “Talking Pictures,” Jenkins shared, “I have a draft of ‘Star Wars’ to submit now, so let’s see what transpires there. Maybe? … They’ve got other directors who’ve been working, but I am now back to handling ‘Rogue Squadron.’ We’ll see how it goes. We need to get it to a point where we’re both content with it.
