In various genres such as horror, slasher films, crime dramas, and suspenseful thrillers, serial killers are frequently featured characters. These villains, with their chilling potential real-world existence, are particularly terrifying. Among the numerous serial killers portrayed in movies, some have attained such iconic status that merely mentioning “Would you like to play a game?” or catching a glimpse of a chainsaw can send shivers down your spine.
In compiling this list, we exclude any fictional serial killer characters who possess overt magical or supernatural abilities. We also omit those directly linked to real-world murderers, although some may have been inspired by them in a loose sense. Instead, we’re focusing on the chilling creations of cinema that persistently invade our modern-day nightmares, reflecting pure human (or not so human) craftsmanship.

Ben
‘Man Bites Dog’
The 1992 French mockumentary and dark comedy titled “Man Bites Dog” tells the story of a serial killer named Ben (played by Benoît Poelvoorde). The film graphically portrays his crimes, and as the filmmakers continue to document him, they gradually become more like him. This unsettling movie was prohibited in multiple countries due to its intense and disturbing nature, but it left a lasting impression on those who viewed it because of its chilling main character.
The Power of Persuasion
I find it chilling that Ben’s depraved actions extend to the senseless slaughter of an entire family, including their innocent children, the brutal gang-rape of a woman, and the cold-blooded murder of a film crew rival. What makes this even more unsettling is not just his horrific behavior, but the fact that filmmakers are eagerly emulating his path. This suggests that Ben’s evil deeds are not only shocking in themselves, but also because they seem to spark imitation and inspiration in others.

Asami
‘Audition’
As a devoted movie enthusiast, I can confidently say that the chilling tale of “Audition” continues to linger in my mind even after the final credits have rolled. This film revolves around the character of Shigeharu Aoyama (played by Ryo Ishibashi), a widower on a quest to find a new partner. Intrigued by Asami Yamazaki (Eihi Shiina) during an audition, he finds himself drawn into a love affair. However, his world takes a dark turn when he uncovers the shocking truth: Asami is not just any ordinary woman; she’s a ruthless serial killer who targets men reminiscent of her abusive stepfather—and Shigeharu fits the bill all too well, making him her next intended victim.
Sadistic Yet Sympathetic
Among the most intriguing female characters on screen, Asami stands out as both captivating and, surprisingly, eliciting sympathy. Her descent into villainy wasn’t a sudden choice but rather a reaction to painful experiences, perpetuating more of the same darkness. Notably, there are plans for a remake of “Audition” which has us eagerly anticipating how they will develop or perhaps darken Asami’s complex character portrayal.

Anton Chigurh
‘No Country for Old Men’
The modern Western film “No Country for Old Men” opens with war veteran Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) accidentally discovering a group of slain drug traffickers and a suitcase containing $2 million. However, relentless assassin Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem), who is after the money, quickly enters the scene, leaving a trail of innocent victims in his wake. Chigurh frequently uses a coin to decide people’s lives, executing them without any signs of regret.
A Widely Lauded Performance
Javier Bardem’s portrayal received universal acclaim, and rightly so. The character Chigurh, played by him, is truly terrifying, symbolizing the disorder and brutality in our world. He considers himself a judge of fate, which means he doesn’t see his actions as evil, thus making them more chilling to witness.

Patrick Bateman
‘American Psycho’
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but feel drawn to the enigmatic character of Patrick Bateman, portrayed brilliantly by Christian Bale in “American Psycho.” On the surface, he appears as an ordinary New Yorker, but beneath that façade lies something sinister and twisted. This gripping narrative delves into Bateman’s descent into darkness, as he yields to his most primal urges, targeting and eliminating anyone who even mildly irritates him. However, the chilling reality is that the line between fiction and fact remains blurred—both for us, the audience, and for Bateman himself, leaving us questioning the authenticity of his grisly deeds.
Killer, or Dead on the Inside?
Many people interpret Bateman’s transition into murder as a step towards moral understanding. Even though killing is inherently wrong, Bateman’s actions (whether factual or fictional) symbolize his growing awareness of a more profound immorality. Essentially, he has come to see life and the people around him as insipid, self-centered, and devoid of depth. When no one challenges his murders, it underscores the idea that, despite Bateman being a serial killer, those around him aren’t morally superior.

Sweeney Todd
‘Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street’
Experience the storyline of Sweeney Todd, portrayed by Johnny Depp, a film that revolves around a barber unjustly expelled from his London residence. Upon his return 15 years later, his primary objectives are to seek vengeance for his wife, who he suspects was victimized and driven to take her own life by the corrupt Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman), and to protect his daughter, Johanna (Jayne Wisener). However, following Johanna’s confinement in an asylum, Sweeney Todd feels he has failed in his mission. As a result, he collaborates with Mrs. Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter), the owner of a pie shop, to murder as many people as possible and transform their remains into pies.
Deliciously Disturbing
Besides having exceptional vocal abilities, Sweeney Todd is a chilling character, with a wrath primarily aimed at Judge Turpin. However, he doesn’t hesitate to murder his clients if it furthers this goal. Interestingly, the validity of this objective is challenged when he nearly kills his own daughter, and indeed does kill several others who are significant in his life. In this aspect, Sweeney Todd isn’t merely a famous serial killer, but a profoundly tragic one.
7
John Doe
‘Se7en’
In the movie Seven, also known as Se7en, Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman portray two dedicated detectives who are on a mission to apprehend a ruthless serial killer. This particular criminal is distinctive because his crimes embody the seven deadly sins, with each act of violence growing increasingly grotesque. The detectives believe they’ve captured the killer, John Doe, but soon discover that they themselves have unwittingly been drawn into his twisted web of deceit.
Seventh on our List
John Doe doesn’t stand out quite as much when it comes to faces and names on our list, but his “What’s in the box?” scene is arguably one of the most chilling moments ever captured in film. Furthermore, the unique brutality of his other crimes is both captivatingly creative and shockingly horrific.
6
Leatherface
‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre series produced a total of nine films, all revolving around a deranged clan of cannibals. In the initial film, a group of teenagers searching for gas for their vehicle unwittingly crossed paths with these cannibals, leading to the gruesome demise of four of them. The lone survivor, Sally, narrowly managed to evade capture by the chainsaw-carrying psychopath, Leatherface.
Real-Life Inspiration
Leatherface is a character based on the notorious serial killer Ed Gein and has been portrayed by various actors. He’s famous for brandishing a chainsaw and donning a mask fashioned from human skin. Unlike other murderers in this category, it appears that Leatherface doesn’t derive pleasure from his killings. Instead, he murders due to fear of his family, a need to appease them, or merely because he’s been instructed to do so.
5
Billy Loomis (Ghostface)
‘Scream’
1996 saw the groundbreaking debut of Wes Craven’s “Scream.” Breaking norms, it swiftly eliminated a prominent actress and skillfully critiqued the horror genre, revitalizing its popularity. The narrative unfolds around high school student Sidney Prescott, who’s grappling with her mother’s murder on the same night. As she mourns, a wave of fresh murders among her peers leaves her shocked to uncover that her own boyfriend, Billy, is the perpetrator.
The First of Many Ghostfaces
In disguise, Billy Loomis executed his gruesome acts, and he wasn’t a lone perpetrator. His accomplice, Stu Macher, who was in a relationship with Sidney’s friend, Tatum, also participated. It was unveiled later that Billy and Stu were the ones who murdered Sidney’s mother years ago. In subsequent films, other characters donned the Ghostface persona, but it was Billy who stood out as the most ruthless and cunning, delivering the most memorable dialogues.
4
Michael Myers
‘Halloween’
When Michael Myers was only six years old, he tragically murdered his older sister on Halloween night. Fifteen years later, he focused his malevolence on his younger sister, Laurie Strode, portrayed by Jamie Lee Curtis. Over the course of 13 films, 12 of which featured Michael Myers, a recurring theme emerged: he would put on his white mask, coveralls, and wield a knife, pursuing his family members relentlessly and killing anyone who dared to obstruct him.
A Tricky Timeline
Previously stated that all killers on this roster were merely human, thus implying a scenario where Michael was afflicted with the Curse of Thorn. This torment led him to commit the heinous act of killing his own family and granted him immortality. Yet, subsequent movies revised this narrative, suggesting that although Michael proved difficult to eliminate, he wasn’t endowed with supernatural powers. Instead, he was labeled as “unadulterated evil” by the filmmakers, and his callous approach to murder leaves little doubt as to why this moniker is deserved.
3
Norman Bates
‘Psycho’
In “Psycho,” I find myself as Marion Crane, pulling into a chilling motel run by Norman Bates, who seems off-kilter from the get-go. After overhearing a strange conversation between him and his mother, I’m gruesomely slain in the shower by an unseen assailant. As the days pass and my sister and beau search for me, they discover that it was none other than Bates—or so it seems—who has taken my life. However, a twist reveals that his mother’s death had given birth to a split personality within him, which is responsible for the heinous act.
A Little Mad
In simpler terms, just like Bates pointed out, everyone experiences moments of madness now and then. Yet, not everyone dons their mother’s clothes and commits multiple murders. The character of Bates, portrayed as a captivating psychopath in film, is also renowned for being an iconic serial killer on screen.
2
Hannibal Lecter
‘The Silence of the Lambs’
In the gripping thriller titled “The Silence of the Lambs“, Jodie Foster plays Clarice Starling, a fledgling FBI agent, while Anthony Hopkins takes on the role of the notorious serial killer Hannibal Lecter. The story follows Clarice as she seeks Hannibal’s assistance in catching another murderer, Buffalo Bill. At first hesitant, Hannibal eventually assists Clarice in piecing together the clues, leading up to his own daring prison escape. Subsequent instalments of the series further delve into Hannibal’s complex past and nefarious actions, solidifying him as an unforgettable, enigmatic character whose story continues to unfold.
Delicious to Watch
It’s challenging to articulate all the factors that make Hannibal Lecter a legendary serial killer portrayed in films. From manipulating a prisoner into committing suicide by swallowing his own tongue to coercing another man into disfiguring himself, Hannibal is both captivating and ruthless. These unsettling scenes are what make the movies so indelible.
1
John Kramer
‘Saw’
In a span of eleven films, the Saw series has significantly revamped the horror genre centering on “death games.” It also introduced the chilling and indelible character of Jigsaw, portrayed by Tobin Bell. The storyline revolves around Jigsaw subjecting criminal individuals or those perceived as ungrateful for their lives to a test that is literally a matter of life and death. This trial frequently involves gruesome scenarios such as missing body parts and agonizing choices, leaving long-lasting psychological scars.
Don’t Play his Game
John Kramer, often referred to as Jigsaw, was undeniably the most renowned and chilling serial killer among those who assumed this alias. His unique moral compass, combined with an innovative approach to designing his macabre games, and a warped notion of justice made him truly terrifying. While it’s not advisable to engage in any games with him, we strongly encourage watching the entire Jigsaw movie series.
