As a sports enthusiast, I’ve always found myself drawn to riveting dramas that encapsulate the human spirit’s indomitable will. Although there are several promising titles slated for release in 2025, it was a film from the previous year, “Unstoppable,” that recently piqued my interest while I was casually browsing through my Prime Video subscription. This captivating tale follows Anthony Robles, a man born with only one leg, who defied countless challenges—physical, financial, and otherwise—to claim the NCAA Division I wrestling championship. The unparalleled inspiration I derived from witnessing Robles’ achievements, not merely as an athlete but as an individual battling seemingly insurmountable odds, has left a lasting impact on me.
It turns out that I hadn’t come across much information about the film “Unstoppable” before its release on streaming platforms. My previous knowledge of the movie primarily revolved around speculations about Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck’s red carpet appearance during the premiere, given their divorce at that time. However, it’s essential to highlight that despite the attention surrounding their encounter at a film festival, the true focus should be on Anthony Robles’ story, which is what makes this movie worth watching. While the former point serves as my main reason for recommending this film, there are other compelling aspects as well.
I Knew Anthony Robles Was Going To Be Impressive, But I Was Absolutely Blown Away By What He Was Capable Of
In the film “Unstoppable“, it was clear from the beginning that Anthony Robles, portrayed by Emmy Award winner Jharrel Jerome (When They See Us)), would display remarkable physical feats. Yet, his path wasn’t just filled with these achievements; he faced numerous challenges as well. A large family, a harsh stepfather, the constant threat of eviction, and the refusal of athletic programs to offer him a scholarship made Anthony’s journey to college an arduous battle.
For me, the most captivating aspect of the movie was watching Anthony join the Arizona State wrestling team. The determination Jerome portrayed, devoid of any self-pity, left me in awe. There were moments when I doubted, “They can’t possibly make him run laps on bleachers. They can’t possibly make him participate in a relay race while carrying a weight. They can’t possibly make him climb a mountain using crutches.” But the movie proved me wrong each time.
Beyond just accomplishing all those tasks depicted in the picture, there was no doubt about his intention. His trainers never offered him a way out, and Anthony himself didn’t seek it. His exceptional talent and unyielding determination not only gained him the admiration of his teammates – as portrayed in the movie, they actively advocated for his inclusion on the team amidst threats to cut the wrestling program – but also won over Coach Shawn Charles (Don Cheadle).

Unstoppable Features An Amazing Cast, Including Jennifer Lopez and Don Cheadle
It wasn’t until I learned about the movie Unstoppable that I was taken aback due to its impressive cast, particularly Jharrel Jerome who played a character you can really support. Interestingly, although Anthony was portrayed by an actor with only two legs, and a green legging was used during filming, with Jerome’s right leg being digitally removed in post-production, Robles stepped in as his stunt and body double, I found myself never doubting the authenticity of Jerome’s performance as an athlete with one limb.
Jennifer Lopez mirrored Judy Robles’ indomitable spirit by advocating for her son. It would have been disheartening to be among those mocking the wrestler’s injured leg or the competitors who dared to claim Anthony had an edge due to a supposedly simpler weight-loss process.
Beyond her constant affection and encouragement, there was more to it. We witnessed Judy bravely leave an abusive marriage, figure out a means to provide shelter for her kids, and eventually strive towards her own education. It’s quite evident where Anthony Robles developed his positive, go-getter mindset.
Some notable performances include Don Cheadle as the passionate and captivating Arizona State wrestling coach, Bobby Cannavale as Judy’s husband who exudes charm but can quickly turn menacing, and Michael Peña as Anthony’s high school wrestling coach Bobby Williams. Cheadle’s inspiration and charisma are so powerful that I would likely join him in battle. As for Cannavale, he radiates charisma from every pore, but his face could darken like a storm cloud at the turn of a dime, indicating impending danger for not only Judy, but others as well.

Unstoppable Provides Everything You Want In A Sports Drama
Unstoppable may not offer anything new in the genre of biographical sports dramas, but it doesn’t have to. It’s because such inspiring films captivate us. They provide a delightful spectacle of the underdog triumphing (although I’m reluctant to label the athlete as an underdog, as he never made me doubt his talent or worthiness of achieving everything he worked tirelessly for).
Jerome passionately conveys the significance of winning the NCAA wrestling championship to Anthony in a heartfelt speech addressed to Bobby Williams. He openly admits that he has no expectations for a professional wrestling career after college. Instead, he explains that what people initially notice about him is what’s absent. As he enters his final season, Jerome emphasizes the immense effort he’s put into this opportunity to alter people’s perception of him. Regardless of how his story unfolds, you can be certain that witnessing his journey will enrich your own perspective.
Many people, both critics and audiences alike, believe that the film “Unstoppable” is a must-watch, with an impressive 77% rating on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer and 87% on the audience’s Popcornmeter. While it follows a typical sports drama structure and boasts a talented cast, I personally think this film stands out among Amazon Prime Video’s offerings because its real-life sports hero deserves recognition for his portrayal of a compelling character, demonstrating remarkable drive and talent.
In the film, the characters share some humorous moments that make it easy to overlook the fact that Anthony Robles has just one leg. It seems likely that this was his intention – to make people focus more on his character than his physical condition. You can watch Unstoppable right now on Amazon Prime Video.
