Recently, various issues concerning Hollywood have attracted much public interest. One such issue is the ongoing court case between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, regarding their involvement in the 2024 film “It Ends with Us”. This topic was humorously addressed at a recent awards event by Judd Apatow, who made light of it, causing laughter among the audience. Prior to this, he also poked fun at Kevin Costner and his “Horizon: An American Saga” movies.
On Saturday, the Directors Guild of America Awards ceremony took place at the Beverly Hilton, recognizing filmmakers for their outstanding work throughout the previous year. This time around, Judd Apatow served as the host, making it his sixth occasion in this role. In his speech to the audience, he broached political topics, bringing up figures such as U.S. President Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and others. He also alluded to The Substance, along with other popular movies. Furthermore, during his remarks, he jokingly critiqued the aforementioned western epics (as reported by THR).
Suppose you’re Kevin Costner’s children and discovering that instead of inheriting a trust fund, you’ll have the freedom to watch ‘Horizon One’ and ‘Two’ anytime you desire.
The director of “Knocked Up” was discussing the financial failure of Kevin Costner’s first film in his four-part series at the box office. Interestingly, this movie producer also starred in, wrote, and directed the films himself, and ended up investing a significant portion of his personal funds into their production. The initial installment, titled “Horizon: Chapter 1”, which received mixed reviews, managed to earn $37.8 million against its production budget of $50 million when it was released last summer. This relatively low earnings could potentially explain why the release date for “Horizon: Chapter 2” has been pushed back from 2024 to 2025.
Over time, Judd Apatow shifted his conversation towards movies that were financially successful in the previous year. During this discussion, he brought up the highly profitable musical fantasy film “Wicked”. Apatow praised Jon M. Chu’s work for its earnings, jokingly adding that “usually to make that much money, you have to sue Blake Lively.” This remark prompted laughter, but his broader commentary on the controversial movie “It Ends with Us”, which received mixed reviews, was less favorable.
So much hazarai over such a terrible movie.

The legal dispute between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni hasn’t been resolved in a court of law yet, but it has had significant impacts in another area.
The term “Hazarai” in Yiddish translates to “unnecessary fuss” or “excessive bother,” and it appears that the legal dispute between parties seems to be an instance of this, revolving around a single film. The controversy started in December 2024 when Blake Lively filed a lawsuit against Justin Baldoni and his production company Wayfarer Studios, claiming sexual harassment on the set of the successful movie “It Ends with Us” and alleging that he collaborated with others to defame her. Earlier this year, Lively officially sued Baldoni based on these accusations. In response, Baldoni denied the allegations and later countersued not only Blake Lively but also her husband Ryan Reynolds and others for alleged defamation, extortion, and more.
Judd Apatow’s jokes aren’t really unexpected, given his reputation for quick-witted humor and his knack for tackling current topics. Over the years, he hasn’t shied away from being candid or direct if he thinks it’s necessary. As of now, neither Kevin Costner, Blake Lively nor Justin Baldoni have responded to his jokes. Whether they would choose to respond is uncertain. However, one thing is clear: Apatow doesn’t hold back when it comes to crafting his comedic jabs.
