2025’s cinematic lineup is brimming with excitement, but among all the upcoming releases, it’s the films directed by women that have my heart pounding in anticipation.
It’s no secret that some of my favorite films from recent years have been directed by women—from the emotionally intense “Past Lives” to the successful exploration of the world of “Barbie”. These outstanding movies have given me quite a rollercoaster ride. Groundbreaking female directors have undoubtedly opened new paths for these remarkable productions.
Today, we’ll talk about the new films by female directors I’m super excited for. Let’s get into it.
F*** Marry Kill (March 2025) – Laura Murphy
Due to our shared desire for an engaging comedy-thriller that leaves us exhilarated, “F*** Marry Kill” is directed by Laura Murphy and features Lucy Hale in the lead role. She portrays a woman on a quest for new love, juggling multiple potential suitors. However, the narrative takes a surprising twist when she uncovers the possibility that one of her admirers might be a dangerous serial killer.
It’s true! I can’t wait for that new series coming in March 2025, featuring Hale as the lead. Reminds me of shows like “You” on Netflix or even “Dexter.” There’s just something about dark comedies that really work well in storytelling, don’t you think? It promises to be an entertaining time.

I Know What You Did Last Summer Sequel (July 18, 2025) – Jennifer Kaytin Robinson
I fully understand your sentiment – it’s challenging to picture another film in the “I Know What You Did Last Summer” series, given its significant impact on ’90s horror movies. For horror enthusiasts like us, it’s a staple conversation piece. Indeed, we cherish it deeply.
This year, we can expect a fresh sequel to hit the screens, and let me tell you, its cast is simply fantastic! Directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, this movie will see the return of Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr., who were part of the original film. Additionally, the ensemble boasts an impressive lineup of young talent such as Madelyn Cline, Jonah Haur-King, and others.
Although we’re unsure about the storyline, there’s no way you wouldn’t be excited for it! I can hardly wait to watch it myself – mark your calendars as it’s coming out on July 18, 2025.

Freakier Friday (August 8th, 2025) – Nisha Ganatra
YES.
Among all the things I’m eagerly anticipating, none excites me more than the upcoming release of “Freakier Friday”. Ever since I first watched it with my mom, this movie has held a special place in my heart and serves as a source of comfort for me. So, when I learned that there would be a sequel to “Freaky Friday”, I knew it was going to be fantastic.
Not only does it add an extra layer of excitement, but it’s also worth noting that the sequel is being helmed by a woman – Nisha Ganatra. She has a rich background in filmmaking, having worked on movies like “Chutney Popcorn” and “Cake”, and directed episodes from popular comedies such as “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “Better Things”.
“It’s even more appealing because a woman is taking charge – Nisha Ganatra. She has quite a filmmaking resume, including movies like ‘Chutney Popcorn’ and ‘Cake’, as well as directing episodes of comedies like ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ and ‘Better Things.’
1. The return of Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan in this upcoming movie significantly enhances my anticipation, but I would’ve still gone to watch it anyway. However, with their appearance, my excitement has grown even more! And the best part is, it’s set to release on August 8, 2025.
OR
2. Having Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan rejoin the cast makes this movie a million times more enticing, but I was planning on seeing it regardless. Nevertheless, their return has certainly added fuel to my excitement! It’s scheduled for release on August 8, 2025.

The Bride! (September 26, 2025) – Maggie Gyllenhaal
Okay, there is a lot to look forward to with this new film from Maggie Gyllenhaal.
The protagonist takes influence not only from Mary Shelley’s timeless novel “Frankenstein” but also the 1935 film titled “Bride of Frankenstein”. To be honest, the movie seems to be shaping up to be something truly spectacular, purely based on its star-studded cast.
Among the stars we’ve got lined up are Christian Bale (a familiar face from projects shared with Gyllenhaal), Penelope Cruz, Peter Sarsgaard, Julianne Hough, and surprisingly enough, Gyllenhaal’s own brother, Jake Gyllenhaal. This upcoming production has a horror movie vibe that definitely piques my interest!
Maggie Gyllenhaal’s involvement as a director significantly enhances the production. Although she has played roles in numerous films throughout her career, including “Donnie Darko,” “Mona Lisa Smile,” “The Dark Knight,” “World Trade Center,” and others, I find her true brilliance lies in directing since she started doing so.
The Lost Daughter” (her first directorial effort) may not have been a blockbuster at the box office, but it garnered immense acclaim from critics and received three Academy Award nominations. The fact that she’s transitioning into a horror movie after crafting such an exceptional psychological drama has me eagerly anticipating her next project. It’s slated for release on September 26, 2025.

Five Nights At Freddy’s 2 (December 5, 2025) – Emma Tammi
I mean, of course, I have to list the upcoming Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. This is my domain, man.
Being raised on these games and having an uncontainable enthusiasm for them, especially their hidden Easter Eggs, I was confident that the first Five Nights at Freddy’s movie would be a hit when it came out. Given the dedicated fanbase this franchise has cultivated, any film they release is bound to perform well.
In the sequel, the same director from the original, Emma Tammi, will be at the helm once more. Many familiar faces from the first movie, such as Josh Hutcherson and Matthew Lillard, are reprising their roles. As a fan, I’d definitely add this to my must-see list.

Materialists (2025) – Celine Song
Although the exact launch date for the upcoming movie titled “Materialists” is still unknown, it’s been confirmed that the A24 film will hit theaters in the year 2025, as per a recent announcement posted on platform X.
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t wait to see the upcoming film from the talented Academy Award-nominated director, Celine Song. This captivating story revolves around a matchmaker in bustling New York City and the colorful cast of characters who populate her life. Among these individuals are her former lover and a successful business tycoon, with whom she becomes entangled, as Deadline reports.
From the storyline alone, it may not appear significant, but if you’re familiar with Song, you know she has an uncanny knack for flipping films on their heads and creating something extraordinary for viewers. Among the movies of 2023, my personal favorite was “Past Lives,” a film I believe few others could surpass. Given her past work, I have faith that Song will deliver another exceptional production – I can’t wait to see it!
As a devoted cinephile, I can hardly contain my enthusiasm for the upcoming movies! Frankly, I can’t wait to catch each and every one of them – it feels like it’s high time we hit the cinema, doesn’t it?
