What Is ‘Godless’ About?

The story unfolds in 1884, centered around a secluded New Mexico town named La Belle, predominantly inhabited by women. The arrival of an injured outlaw named Roy Goode (Jack O’Connell) to Alice Fletcher’s (Michelle Dockery) ranch, a self-reliant widow on the fringes of La Belle who shares her life with her mother-in-law and son, brings potential peril to this isolated community.

Growing weary of Frank’s reprehensible actions, Roy decided he wanted no further association with the gang, so he made off with their ill-gotten funds and escaped. However, anyone who aids Roy, intentionally or unintentionally, risks provoking the anger of Frank and his men. Consequently, they have amassed a bloody trail in their pursuit of Roy.

When Frank learns that Roy is being sheltered in the town of La Belle, he plans retribution against them. However, the women of La Belle remain unphased by Frank’s approach. Rather than fleeing or surrendering Roy, they bravely decide to protect themselves from Frank and his violent gang. Despite their lack of men, the resilient women of Godless prove they are not to be underestimated. They may be without male companions, but they are far from defenseless.

Why ‘Godless’ Is Worth Watching

Instead of typical Westerns, Godless focuses on women as central characters and empowers them by giving them control over their own actions.
