This unique element adds depth to its engaging narrative. Remaining faithful to what makes Westerns enthralling, it also manages to introduce something fresh into the genre. Women have always been integral to the Western storyline. In “Godless“, they are not merely portrayed as prostitutes or damsels in distress but take center stage in a way that truly showcases their strength and resilience.

Upon its premiere, the show “Godless” received overwhelmingly favorable responses from both critics and viewers. In essence, anyone who hasn’t watched this captivating female-led Western yet should certainly consider doing so.

What Is ‘Godless’ About?

The story unfolds in 1884, centered around a secluded New Mexico town named La Belle, predominantly inhabited by women. After a calamitous mining accident, the male population dwindles significantly, leaving only the sheriff, Bill McNue (Scoot McNairy), and his young deputy, Whitey Winn (Thomas Brodie-Sangster). The arrival of an injured outlaw named Roy Goode (Jack O’Connell) to Alice Fletcher’s (Michelle Dockery) ranch, a self-reliant widow on the fringes of La Belle who shares her life with her mother-in-law and son, brings potential peril to this isolated community.

While it’s important to note that Roy himself isn’t dangerous, it’s actually the infamous criminal named Frank Griffin (played by Jeff Daniels) who is the one they should be wary of. Accompanied by his band of outlaws, Frank’s sole objective is to track down Roy, a former protégé he feels was betrayed, and exact revenge on him. Growing weary of Frank’s reprehensible actions, Roy decided he wanted no further association with the gang, so he made off with their ill-gotten funds and escaped. However, anyone who aids Roy, intentionally or unintentionally, risks provoking the anger of Frank and his men. Consequently, they have amassed a bloody trail in their pursuit of Roy.

When Frank learns that Roy is being sheltered in the town of La Belle, he plans retribution against them. However, the women of La Belle remain unphased by Frank’s approach. Rather than fleeing or surrendering Roy, they bravely decide to protect themselves from Frank and his violent gang. Despite their lack of men, the resilient women of Godless prove they are not to be underestimated. They may be without male companions, but they are far from defenseless.

Why ‘Godless’ Is Worth Watching

Instead of typical Westerns, Godless focuses on women as central characters and empowers them by giving them control over their own actions. In the harsh environment and era depicted, it was a particularly challenging time for everyone, but especially for women. However, this Netflix series emphasizes the resilience of these women in the face of such adversity.

Although the mining accident caused them to be without their men, it wasn’t that hardship alone that made them strong. Instead, it pushed them to discover the strength they already possessed within themselves. This resilience is reminiscent of a common theme in many Western narratives, typically associated with male characters. However, in this scenario, the show’s female leads are demonstrating this rugged determination, setting them apart from their typical male counterparts.

The show “Godless” offers an unusual narrative while still preserving the captivating aspects of traditional Westerns. It’s unique within its genre but avoids common clichés, making it a must-watch for Western enthusiasts as it truly encapsulates what makes the genre exceptional.

Moreover, the series boasts an exceptional ensemble, each delivering outstanding performances. Godless delivers an unexpectedly compelling take on the Western genre that viewers might not realize they’re craving. Thus, it’s worthwhile to give it a watch, as it is now available for streaming on Netflix.
