The primary purpose of movie trailers is to offer viewers a tantalizing glimpse into a fresh film, providing just the right amount of intrigue to persuade them to spend their money on theater tickets. Occasionally, production companies might unintentionally divulge too much information about the movie, sometimes even revealing the climax. However, Marvel Studios is known for taking extra precautions to prevent spoilers, even employing CGI to conceal characters, as demonstrated in “Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Whoa, even as a gamer, I couldn’t help but notice something odd about the Super Bowl trailer for Marvel’s upcoming release in 2025, “Thunderbolts.” The movie looks awesome, focusing on a ragtag group of anti-heroes led by the mysterious Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), who’s recruiting them for some high-risk mission involving the super-powered Sentry (Lewis Pullman). But right at the beginning, de Fontaine makes a statement that could change the entire course of the MCU… and maybe even spoil Marvel’s first film of 2025, “Captain America: Brave New World.
Excuse me, what about the Avengers?
Initially introduced in “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” the character Valentina Allegra de Fontaine appears to be a more sinister counterpart to Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), with the objective of gathering a superhero team for government purposes. In the initial scene of the “Thunderbolts” trailer, it seems that de Fontaine is being questioned by political authorities. Shocking some fans, she asserts in a daring manner, “The Avengers won’t be returning.
In “Avengers: Endgame,” the group had disbanded, and in the upcoming movie “Captain America: Brave New World,” it appears that President Ross (played by Harrison Ford) enlists Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) to gather a new team of Avengers. If the original Avengers don’t reappear as de Fontaine mentions, it might imply that Ross’s efforts to reform the team were unsuccessful. Since there are no other known heroes active at this point in the story, another explanation seems unlikely.
Or is this much ado about nothing?
It appears as though the Super Bowl trailer for “Captain America: Brave New World” may seem to reveal the ending, specifically that the Avengers won’t reform. However, there might be other interpretations for why the Avengers appear absent. One such possibility is that the scene in question occurs at a point in the movie where the Avengers are temporarily disbanded or otherwise not present.
As a die-hard fan, I find myself pondering about a possible interpretation of this scene featuring Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. Instead of assuming it’s her convincing lawmakers about the necessity of the Thunderbolts for the movie’s mission, what if it’s a scene from later in the film? Perhaps, the Avengers are away on a mission and that’s why she mentions their absence.
Alternatively, this scene could happen before “Brave New World” events unfold. It could be that Bucky’s (Sebastian Stan) role in “Thunderbolts” is what keeps him from being around Sam Wilson during the events of “Brave New World.” After all, it’s still unclear whether these two films are set at different times or even happening simultaneously. Bucky’s absence in “Brave New World” could be explained by his involvement in “Thunderbolts,” making this an intriguing piece of the Marvel Cinematic Universe puzzle!
Regardless of the approach, it’s crucial that we find out something definitive about “Captain America: Brave New World” once it premieres on February 14.
