Selena Gomez spoke out regarding the recent racially charged controversy surrounding her “Emilia Pérez” co-star, Karla Sofia Gascón. She stated openly that she holds no remorse about participating in the project’s production.
During an appearance at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Sunday evening, Gomez was queried by a moderator about her well-being amidst the tumultuous Academy Awards campaign for Emilia Pérez. “I’m doing quite well,” Gomez responded. “Some of the enchantment has faded, but I opt to remain proud of my achievements and I’m simply grateful, living without any regrets.”

At the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Sunday night, Gomez was questioned by a moderator about her state given the rocky path of Emilia Pérez‘s Oscar campaign. “I’m doing fine,” Gomez said. “A bit of the magic has worn off, but I choose to remain proud of what I’ve accomplished and I’m just thankful, living with no regrets.
Gomez added with emphasis, “And I would do this movie over and over again if I could.”
Her reply brought applause from the crowd.
In January of this year, posts made by Gascón, who portrays the main character Emilia Pérez in a Netflix movie, have been brought under scrutiny once more. These posts, which were shared years ago, contain offensive comments about people of African descent, immigrants, and Islam, causing controversy due to their racially charged nature.
Following the dispute that arose, Gascón – the first openly transgender individual ever nominated for an Oscar in an acting category – has frequently expressed apologies and tried to counter allegations of racial insensitivity and xenophobia. This includes an extended interview with CNN en Español lasting approximately one hour.
Zoe Saldaña, Gomez’s fellow actor, has clearly expressed her dissociation from Gascón’s remarks. During a question-and-answer session in London, she stated, “It truly saddens me because I don’t endorse such views, and I have zero tolerance for any derogatory speech directed towards individuals of any community.
Previously, Emilia Pérez and director Jacques Audiard announced their professional separation. Following Audiard’s disclosure, Gascón expressed her intention to avoid discussing the movie further.
After watching Jacques’ interview, I chose to let the movie speak for itself – for Jacques, the cast, the amazing crew, for the wonderful journey we shared, and for the beautiful tribute to love and diversity it represents. I hope my silence will enable the film to be fully appreciated. To those who have been affected negatively during this process, I offer my heartfelt apologies. (Gascón’s Instagram post)
