RuPaul’s Drag Race stands as one of the greatest reality shows ever made, and I’ve been a loyal fan since its debut in 2009 with Season 1. As we approach Season 17, it has delivered several unforgettable moments, such as the addition of The Badonka Dunk Tank, which twice rescued queens from elimination following their lip sync losses. I enjoyed witnessing longtime judge Michelle Visage being drenched, but I’m relieved that aspect of the competition is now behind us.
In each new season of “Drag Race,” both the format and the network can change, though much of the past seasons are accessible via Paramount+. Notably, Season 17 reintroduced the Rate-A-Queen system for its premiere and introduced The Badonka Dunk Tank as a last chance for two queens to stay in the competition. In this season’s six episodes so far, Michelle has been dunked by both Hormona Lisa and Arrietty, which added excitement but also means only three contestants have been eliminated thus far. I must admit, I’m eager to see more eliminations!
In essence, reality competition shows require tension, and unfortunately, the double elimination of two queens was undermined by The Badonka Dunk Tank. Hormona was indeed eliminated in the recent episode, but overall, Season 17 seems to be progressing slowly, much like a snail.
It’s clear that strategically saving two queens in this manner was beneficial for the network, extending their advertising revenue over a prolonged period. With Snatch Game approaching next week and eleven queens participating, it seems likely they will be divided into groups, potentially influencing the season’s overall flow. Alas, no more dunk tanks – at least for now!
Indeed, it’s undeniable that the format shift resulted in some entertaining TV moments, and Michelle Visage being dunked was definitely one of the highlights. What added to the humor was RuPaul’s amusing response to his fellow creative force going into the water, which included his famous mix of a scream and laughter. Unfortunately, it appears that element of the game is not set to continue for the rest of Season 17.
Despite my previous comments, I must admit that Season 17 of RuPaul’s Drag Race has been an entertaining journey thus far. Unlike prior seasons, the contestants this year appear less hesitant to engage in arguments or display shady behavior during interviews, leading to increased drama and memorable quotes. Moreover, with the removal of the immunity option for contestants, I anticipate that the competition’s intensity and tension will escalate significantly. We’ll simply have to stay tuned to see how it unfolds as fresh episodes air every Friday on MTV.
