Born to Punjabi film director Mukesh Gautam, Yami Gautam initially harbored aspirations of becoming an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer. However, during a visit by some friends in Chandigarh, who suggested she consider entering the Bollywood industry, her parents were encouraged to let her pursue acting instead.

On television, Yami has appeared in soap operas such as Chand Ke Paar Chalo, Yeh Pyar Na Hoga Kam, among others. Her first Bollywood role was in the 2012 film Vicky Donor, alongside Ayushmann Khurrana. Some of the films she has worked on include Action Jackson, Badlapur, Sanam Re, Kaabil with Hrithik Roshan, Uri: The Surgical Strike, Bala, A Thursday, Dasvi, and others.

In the year 2023, Yami Gautam featured in the comedy-drama titled OMG 2, alongside Akshay Kumar and Pankaj Tripathi. Her most recent role was in the critically appreciated political action thriller, Article 370, released in 2024.

On Valentine’s Day, 2025, the action-comedy wedding film titled “Dhoom Dhaam,” starring Pratik Gandhi alongside Yami, will make its debut on Netflix.
