In the upcoming Captain America film titled “Captain America: Brave New World,” Director Julius Onah steps into some significant footsteps following the acclaimed Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War. Previous installments were highly praised for their interpretation of Steve Rogers, but now with Sam Wilson wielding the shield, Onah is ready to spin this narrative, which he characterizes as a suspenseful thriller embedded within a superhero movie. In simpler terms, Onah, a Nigerian immigrant, shared with Vanity Fair a tale about theatrical encounters that significantly influenced his development as a storyteller. At eleven years old, when he relocated to the United States with his family, it was a Harrison Ford political thriller he watched during his childhood that would spark inspiration in him later on.
Back when I initially settled in America, two films stood out as my inaugural cinema experiences. The initial one I watched was “The Lion King,” followed by “Clear and Present Danger,” a movie that left quite an impression on me.
In “Captain America: Brave New World,” the filmmaker completes a full circle, as he will collaborate with Ford again on a film centered around political themes; however, this time it’s Anthony Mackie taking on the system, while Ford plays the role of the President.
‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Is Influenced by Julius Onah’s Formative Childhood as an Immigrant
Julius Onah, who previously worked as a waiter in New York and faced various challenges including the complexities of obtaining citizenship, never thought his dream of making films would lead him to direct a Captain America movie. Now, he’s astonished at how far he has progressed, sharing with Vanity Fair that “I used to imagine it, but never in my wildest dreams did I think this would happen.” Interestingly, Onah has cleverly infused aspects from Ford’s 1994 film into Captain America: Brave New World, while also redefining his role as something more oppositional.
Title “Clear and Present Danger” revolves around CIA agent Jack Ryan (Harrison Ford), who finds himself entangled in an illicit conflict orchestrated by the U.S. administration and a drug cartel. The film boasts a talented ensemble cast that includes Willem Dafoe, James Earl Jones, Anne Archer, and Benjamin Bratt. Remarkably, the promotion of “Brave New World” appears to cleverly interweave motifs of conspiracies and the intricacies of global politics.
In summary, Onah’s journey from being a fan of Ford on the silver screen to actually working with him is truly inspiring. Despite the challenges they encountered, such as delays and reshoots, it appears that “Brave New World” represents the pinnacle of Onah’s ambitions.
