Contains spoilers for “Fire Country” Season 3, Episode 10 — “The Leone Way”
Characters in “Fire Country” have been plagued by poor judgment calls and immature actions throughout much of Season 3. For instance, Gabriela Perez (Stephanie Arcila) has faced the consequences of her broken engagement and mishandling the most significant storyline of Season 3. Similarly, Bode Leone (Max Thieriot) has acted recklessly, potentially jeopardizing his new life beyond Three Rock with questionable behavior, and even entertaining thoughts of another professional liaison. Even Gabriela’s father, Manny (Kevin Alejandro), has put his own chances at release on the line to save Gabriela. Season 3 nearly pushed us towards a revival of the annoying couple by hinting at a reunion between Gabriela and Bode.
In episode 10, titled “The Leone Way,” things are taken in a new direction. Instead of the usual dialogues, characters engage in mature conversations and cooperatively tackle complex challenges. Moreover, they face problems that cannot be solved with fire axes or hoses, making it an entirely unique addition to the series “Fire Country.” This fresh approach also provides fresh insights into the characters’ personalities. Thankfully, it steers clear of the overused love triangle plot, which fans have grown weary of. The outcome is both refreshing and captivating to behold.
The Leones face down memory loss and abandoned babies
In “The Leone Way,” Bode, along with his father Vince (Billy Burke), uncle Luke (Michael Trucco), and grandfather Walter (Jeff Fahey) embark on a fishing trip. However, things take an unexpected turn. It becomes apparent that Walter’s memory issues are indicative of Alzheimer’s or another condition causing memory loss. As Vince learns that Luke has taken a job away from home, leaving Vince to care for his father single-handedly—a responsibility he doesn’t desire—Luke asserts his need to live his own life. The family is forced to confront the situation when Walter vanishes in the dead of night. Although Bode understands they can no longer ignore Walter’s symptoms, Luke and Vince continue to deny the reality, but their relationship strengthens when the Leones come across a man who has been stranded in the wilderness for several days after a car accident.
At Station 42, Audrey James (played by Leven Rambin) and Gabriela work together under the supervision of Sharon (Diane Farr). During the night, a baby is brought in and all three women develop a bond with the child. When the baby’s mother comes back to take him, Gabriela believes she deserves another chance, while Audrey, who was abandoned by her own mother, feels the baby should go into foster care. Rather than arguing, they gain insight into each other’s characters. It is Sharon who steps in, reminding them of DCFS rules, and stating that the baby will be placed in foster care temporarily, but his mother can regain custody if she presents a bracelet given by Sharon. As a result of this exchange, Gabriela and Audrey form a friendship.
Eventually, Bode and Sharon escort Walter to a physician, while Jake (Jordan Calloway) reveals to Bode that he had been intimate with Gabriela. However, Bode has already moved past this situation and informs his friend that family matters outweigh romantic complications. Fans of “Fire Country” can enjoy both character advancement and intriguing drama.
