In December 2024, Bethesda, the creators of Fallout, launched a video game for the Indiana Jones series. Unlike previous games where Harrison Ford played the main character, Troy Baker takes on the role in this new release. When asked about his thoughts on using body and face doubles, Ford shared some intriguing insights.
As a movie buff who’s passionate about Indiana Jones, I can’t help but associate that iconic character with Harrison Ford. Yet, when it comes to the video game “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” produced by Bethesda, it’s Troy Baker who lends his voice to the in-game character – not Ford himself. Troy Baker, famously known for voicing Joel in the game “The Last of Us”, steps into Indiana Jones’ shoes (or fedora) in this digital realm. In a conversation with the Wall Street Journal, Harrison Ford himself revealed some insights about his body double for the game.
You don’t require advanced technology like AI to pilfer my spirit. You can achieve it quite easily with just a few cents or pennies by offering innovative concepts and utilizing your skills effectively. The task was skillfully accomplished without the aid of artificial intelligence.
In 1937, the storyline of “The Great Circle” unfolds, a year following the incidents depicted in “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” Consequently, this game’s events have no impact on the outcome of “Dial of Destiny.” To maintain continuity, instead of digitally de-aging Harrison Ford as seen in the film, they opted for someone who closely resembled him. When the initial trailer dropped, many praised the portrayal of “old Indiana” over what was shown in “Dial of Destiny,” which, to be fair, did look quite good.
Beyond just its visual appeal, “The Great Circle” presents a range of potential storylines that could be developed for the franchise in cinemas and streaming platforms. Harrison Ford’s portrayal as Indy suggests that the series doesn’t have to end with him; and according to Ford himself, advanced technologies like AI and de-aging are not necessary to keep the character vibrant.
It’s not uncharted territory for Ford, as he’s accustomed to seeing other actors take on younger versions of his famous characters. He commended Alden Ehrenreich’s portrayal of young Han Solo in “Solo: A Star Wars Story“. In the past, Ford advised those assuming the role of Han Solo to “make it your own”, demonstrating a history of encouraging and praising actors who embody his iconic characters.
Right now, you can play “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” on both Xbox and PC systems. A version for PlayStation 5 will be released in the springtime. Plus, all Indiana Jones movies, including the upcoming “Dial of Destiny,” are available for streaming if you have a subscription to Disney+.
