The idea of a “third place” – a term used by sociologist Ray Oldenburg in his 1989 book “The Great Good Place” – implies that individuals need more than just a home and a workplace. They also benefit from a social setting where they can interact with people who share similar interests and cultivate a sense of belonging among the community.
For numerous individuals, a golf course can function as an alternative social hub. Regrettably, public golf courses often fail to promote interaction outside of playing hours, and country clubs tend not to focus on accessibility. However, a novel concept called House—a membership club providing facilities ranging from workspaces to simulators and cafes—aspires to combine the most appealing aspects of both settings.
Prior to its grand opening, Even House has already accumulated a waitlist for its assorted membership levels priced between $200 and $450 per month. Unlike similar golf-centric businesses that encompass indoor golf facilities, interactive driving ranges, and mini golf courses, the creators envision Even House as a destination where patrons frequently return. Instead of visiting briefly and departing, they aim for visitors to spend half a day or even the entire day. The surge of creatives, athletes, and flexible workers adopting the sport in recent times suggests that this might be a feasible scenario.
We recently connected with the team to find out more about the community they’re building.
Why did you decide to open Even House?
The concept for Even House emerged naturally as my passion for golf grew and I delved deeper into the golfing world. It became apparent that golf was evolving – more individuals from diverse backgrounds were taking up the sport, innovative off-course facilities like Topgolf were flourishing, and an array of new brands were emerging. While traditional country clubs were thriving, they remained inaccessible to many. This sparked the idea for Even House: a membership club that offers indoor golfing, socializing, working, dining, and relaxation spaces. Essentially, it’s a second home for members, a place where they can unwind even when not playing golf.
How did you choose the location?
In sunny Southern California, where golf is deeply ingrained in the local lifestyle, we sought an ideal venue for our project. We desired a spacious area with lofty ceilings, an appealing ambiance, and a central location suitable for both residents and nearby companies. After consulting several real estate agents, we didn’t find our perfect match. So, we embarked on a journey, literally strolling the streets until we stumbled upon the ideal location. It spans 14,000 square feet in a stunning building, boasting a private patio, and is surrounded by fantastic neighbors like The Parlor and Rye Goods. We couldn’t be happier with our choice of location. As we plan for future expansions, we will employ an innovative approach to selecting locations and spaces, which we’ll share more details about soon!
Could you please share the details of your room’s layout, including any decisions you made concerning movement, illumination, materials, and so on?
The design held significant significance for us. We aimed to create a space that exuded a sense of novelty and contemporary appeal, yet retained an enduring country club ambiance. Essentially, we sought to harmoniously combine elements from both spheres. A large portion of the furnishings are custom-crafted, lending a unique, intimate feel to the entire establishment. Our primary focus was on establishing a venue where social interactions take center stage. Whether you’re hosting business associates, catching up with friends over drinks, or testing your skills on the putting green, everything is designed for smooth transitions.
What kinds of events do you envision hosting at Even House?
At Even House, we aim to bring together a variety of experiences – from food pop-ups and golf fittings, to musical performances by special guests, charity tournaments, and networking events. It’s an opportunity for people to connect over shared interests, whether it’s golfing or simply meeting others with similar mindsets. We envision Even House as a vibrant community center, so our events will embody that spirit – they’ll be entertaining and welcoming to all.
How would you describe the culture you’re hoping to cultivate?
Here at [name], we strive to foster an atmosphere that seamlessly blends casual comfort with premium elegance. Our goal is to provide a welcoming environment where everyone, regardless of their golfing abilities or backgrounds, can unwind and connect with others. We aim to make our members feel valued and included, without any sense of snobbery or pressure. It’s about establishing genuine relationships, enjoying ourselves, and providing a sanctuary for rejuvenation. In short, we want our community to feel like a unique, special place where everyone can relax and have a fantastic time.
