At Luar, Raul Lopez Steps In With His Good Foot

On Monday evening in New York City’s Financial District, Luar concluded New York Fashion Week with an electrifying Fall 2025 show titled “El Pato.” The event featured pulsating bass beats and high energy, attracting notable figures like NLE Choppa, Moses Sumney, and Honey Balenciaga to the front row. The venue, a lobby in the Financial District, was adorned with oversized Ana bags throughout. The bold, unapologetic collection displayed was undeniably the creation of Dominican-American designer Raul Lopez, solidifying Luar’s strong influence on American fashion trends.

The title of the collection, “El Pato,” is a derogatory term used towards gay men in the Caribbean; and on the runway, Lopez showcased every effort to bring attention, liberation, and celebration to the very traits that were once the target of mockery. Oversized hoods accentuated stereotypical gestures associated with the LGBTQ+ community. Bold suits transformed corporate attire into drag. Dramatic shapes acknowledged the ballroom scene. A provocative “I Talk Shit About You in Spanish” piece was indeed crude. And the vibrant Ana bags were fiercely affectionate, paying tribute to the women who influenced Lopez’s work: his mother, grandmothers, and sisters, all of whom are named Ana.

Luar consistently embodies and supports the culture – this is their motto, you see. They amplify the voices that resonate and elevate the brand through a design aesthetic that frequently references its muses so explicitly, it’s seldom necessary to look for the label’s name on the tag.

Lopez frequently advises, “Enter with your best step,” which he learned from the queens on Christopher Street during his time as a young New Yorker. This saying drives his creative endeavors today. With the audience’s infectious applause, the models’ swift walks and fashion’s absolute valor, a Luar show is always its own unique event. It’s evident that Lopez’s moves are still sharp as ever.
