Following a short break from film directing, Karan Johar made his comeback with Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani – a delightful romantic comedy. Starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, this movie was like a refreshing breeze. Alia’s character, the Rani, boldly confronted patriarchy, while Singh’s role as Rocky shattered stereotypes with panache. Regarding Ranveer’s impressive Kathak dance scene in the film, Karan Johar referred to him as ‘the greenest flag’, and shared insights from his conversation with the talented Dhurandhar actor.
During an interview on Lilly Singh’s YouTube channel, filmmaker Karan Johar shared that Ranveer Singh wasn’t anxious about how viewers would react to him performing Kathak dance with Tota Roy Chowdhury in the song Dola Re Dola. Openly expressing his thoughts, Karan Johar said, “Ranveer is as natural and fresh as a green flag,” implying that he fully embraced the character Rocky Randhawa, just like a true movie star would.
Speaking about the star’s response to mastering the dance sequence after learning a new form, Karan Johar shared that the actor from Band Baaja Baaraat spent approximately one and a half months preparing for that specific sequence. He mentioned that at some point, the actor confided in him saying, “I don’t believe I possess the natural talent for Kathak, but I’m going to give it my best shot.” Karan remembered this conversation vividly.
The director of Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna acknowledged that Ranveer Singh excelled in the dance scene, performing flawlessly in front of approximately 500 people on set. Interestingly, neither Ranveer nor Tota were professionally trained dancers, but under the tutelage of Vaibhavi Merchant, they developed a sense of grace and executed their moves like seasoned performers. According to Johar, there was no question about whether Ranveer was convincing as a leading man; he was simply outstanding, concluded the filmmaker.
During the same interview, Karan discussed his first film, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, and acknowledged that there was a subtle form of hypocrisy in Shah Rukh Khan’s character, Rahul. He also reminisced about being reprimanded by Shabana Azmi after she saw the movie.
